by the Eagles...
The idiot sportscasters locally don't get why so many people despise Tebow...they theorize all kinds of nonsense, but they tend to overlook the fact that he's not considered NFL material by everyone else in the League; that his sanctimony and self-proclaimed virginity is a distraction from the game as well as the commercialization - which is what it's REALLY all about; that he has been championed by the RWers who adore the fact that he's a devoutly-practicing Christian White guy who's won the Heisman, won the national football title twice, and states that he's never had intercourse with a female. In other words: he's the second-coming of Jesus himself.
We are famous here for hiring cast-offs and dirtbags from other teams, Witness Mike Vick the dog-killer/torturer, while we cast off first-class players for no obvious or stated reason, witness Desean Jackson.
This is a publicity stunt which the Eagles "do" just when baseball season starts annually. They really didn't need to do it this year because the Phillies are about as bad as it can get in the Major Leagues due to idiocy right at the top of their organization, or what passes for an organization.

Still, the current utter catastrophe of the Philadelphia sports teams (in pretty much every major sport) is a joy to everyone not of Philadelphia.

(9,886 posts)I've read (granted, not every one operating in this city) has made at least passing reference to the fact that he isn't NFL material and has expressed general bafflement at this development. I've seen absolutely no adoration. Guess we read differnet sources.
That said, yeah, Philadelphia sports is not at a high point at the moment. To me, the Flyers are the real bafflement, but I don't follow sports except in a general way, so I could be missing something.

(41,692 posts)His personnel moves have been baffling and if he thinks he can when in the NFL with a college offense---well---he ain't going to last long.

(41,692 posts)The unbelievable publicity this guy gets for being a 4th string QB is hilarious.
The only reason that Tebow still exists in the NFL is not talent---it's publicity---and his religion.
There have been plenty of college stars...especially QB's, that simply were not good enough for the NFL.
kentuck
(111,052 posts)As for his religious displays, I have seen others do similar displays without the criticism. Seems like a decent person to me? He will bring in the fans, no doubt about that.

(41,692 posts)Simply because he had an offensive coordinator who taylored Tebow's college style game. It worked initially---but once NFL coordinators figured him out he was toast.
Tebow was great in college. He rarely threw the ball and functioned well in a wildcat type offense.
That was college. The Pro's are light years ahead of college ball. Way faster, way bigger, etc.
Tebow is to slow in the Pro's. Wildcat offenses simply do not work.
So what to do---he can't run anymore---so he has to pass. And there is the rub.
He can't pass. His 46 percent accuracy rating is horrendous. Not even close to NFL standards.
Denver cut him and he went to New York--- he sucked...bad.
New York cut him and he went to New England.... He sucked even more.
Sure he's a decent person---but so are you from what I heard. Thing is--- I don't think you can play for the NFL.
Lurker Deluxe
(1,036 posts)Not exactly.
Tebow came into Denver when they were done, and he ran off 6 wins in a row. Teams made adjustments and he struggled in the last three, beat the Steelers in the first round and then promptly got routed in New England in January. Surprise there, since everyone knows that NE never wins at home in January.
Elway moved to get rid of him instead of letting him mentor under a star (Manning) and to say he sucked with the Jets is just messed up, he was 6-8 75% throwing ... they never let him play. The Pats brought him into camp and he did not make the final cut, neither did some 40 other players.
A winning QB with less than 400 pass attempts in the NFL and he is not even picked up as a backup?? He was thrown to the wolves and never allowed to mature as a player under a good coaching system and he did what he knew how to do .. win.
I see no problem with him getting a chance to play, if he can mature as a player and make it ... great, if not ... such is life.

(41,692 posts)You can't mentor bad mechanics, bad accuracy, bad pocket presence, and simply being slow.
Elway--Ryan, Belichick---- what---they are all wrong?
Chip Kelly threw Tebow a bone and I'm pretty certain it's a small one.

(111,052 posts)He can run pretty well with the ball. But he wants to play quarterback, I guess?
ProfessorGAC
(64,861 posts)His success in Denver was far luckier than even Trumad's analysis suggest.
He won 3 of those games against teams without the starting QB and either without the starting RB or #1 WR.
Against Pittsburgh, the two best defensive players on either team (both on the Steelers) missed the game.
And during his stretch, defenses had not adjusted to the oddities of that offense.
Since then they did. He's too slow to outrun a defense oriented to stop that attack, and won't challenge the blitz packages because he is too slow to release and can't hit the water from a canoe.
His record as a starter is a fluke. And had you seen the games, you would know that.

(24,853 posts)In 2007 Tebow had these NCAA stats:
#1 in the NCAA in yards per attempt.
#11 in the NCAA in completion percentage (go do a search for the names of the ten who finished in front of him, and how many of THEM are in the NFL today?).
#23 in passing yards.
#8 (tie) in touchdowns.
Misleading stats I know because Florida plays such a cotton candy schedule, amiright? Oh yeah, let's not forget that he rarely threw the ball...
In what was Tebow's last college game, he completed 31-of-35 passes for 482 yards and three touchdowns and accounted for four total touchdowns and 533 yards of total offense, which set a record for a Bowl Championship Series game.
At the end of his college career, Tebow held 5 NCAA, 14 Southeastern Conference, and 28 University of Florida statistical records. He was the SEC's all-time leader in career passing efficiency (170.8), completion percentage (67.1%), passing touchdown to interception ratio (5.5 to 1), rushing yards by a quarterback (2947), rushing touchdowns (any position) (57), and total touchdowns responsible for (145).
Among many mentions in the NCAA Division-I record book, Tebow is ranked second in career passing efficiency, third in career yards per attempt (9.33), 8th in career rushing touchdowns, and also owns the record for most consecutive games in which he both threw at least one touchdown pass and scored at least one rushing touchdown (14).
Come on... face it. He's white, religious, and takes a knee after being involved in a scoring play. All three are fucked up things in the DU Rule Book.

Yet, the rapist won't get half the criticism here that Tebow gets....odd.
