What, exactly, is the difference?
I read a great point here on DU a few days ago about the multi-billion dollar adoption industry, and how certain tax-free entities with a vested interest in that industry are among the loudest proponents of "abstinence only" sex education, denial of access to contraception, and outright bans on abortion. I wish I could find that thread again--quite a good one.
However, in the midst of all that, a question percolated to the top of my brain; forgive me if it's obvious or has been discussed here before:
How is the for-profit adoption industry qualitatively different from straight up human trafficking? What's the difference between, in essence, selling a child for thousands of dollars versus selling a child for thousands of dollars?
Let me state that I am absolutely not criticising anyone who has adopted a child. I am instead taking issue with an industry that profits handsomely from the noble and loving efforts of adoptive parents and from the mothers who put their children up for adoption.
Your insights are welcome.
