Did anyone else just hear Andrea Mitchell declare that marriage is a "sacrament"??

I'm pretty sure I just heard her say that while grilling Stephenie Cutter (I think that's who it was) about Joe Biden's statement on gay marriage the other day.

I did not hear her preface it with "some believe" ... it sounds to be as if, in her attempts to get Cutter to say something controversial, Mitchell declared that "marriage is a sacrament".

Which I find odd because you can go to city hall and get married with no clergy or religious trimmings of any kind.

Did anyone else catch this? Did I hear it correctly?

Unfortunately, the Catholic sacrament is called by the same name as the civil procedure for publicly affirming a relationship. The trouble comes when rather dull-witted people confuse the two, and start thinking that because a particular form of marriage is recognized by the civil authority, it requires a church authority to do the same. Doubly unfortuantely, there are well-financed interests that can turn a buck on the confusion, who are eager to exploit it for their own gain, and to the detriment of an orderly society by dividing people and setting them at odds with one another over a phony issue.

to maybe deny it. Maybe to get Cutter to say, "well, Andrea, marriage is actually a civil procedure" ... or something like that.

By Andrea saying it that way she (1) reinforces that belief, and (2) creates the potential for a prolonged discussion of whether or not those who think their church marriage is the more important "procedure" should be allowed to believe so ... I can hear Andrea's follow up now ... "So, you are saying that the President doesn't think the marriage people get in the church matters??!!??"

You know, I think that most people do not realize how skeptical of authority American Catholics can get. If a priest can abuse his power, then, why not everybody else?

I think it is a very relevant topic, especially coming from someone like Mitchell.

I think we both heard Andrea make the same insane declaration.

I was married to my wife in a church, and I'm happy that my religious family and friends, and my religious in-laws, all participated and enjoyed it.

But for Andrea to make that declaration, well, it pissed me off. I really did not need some religious leader to "sanctify" my marriage.

I ALLOWED a minister to officiate our wedding in a church, the church my wife grew up in, because it was important to her, her family, and to even my mother.

In reality, my wife and I signed the official paper work 2 days prior.

her comment stood out because it stated as if it was a fact, full stop. I didn't hear her qualify it by saying 'according to some religions' or 'according to Catholics' or anything along those lines.
