Romney Refuses To Stand Up To Woman Who Says Obama Should Be ‘Tried For Treason’

At a town hall event in Ohio this afternoon, a woman asked Mitt Romney what he would do to roll back the size of government, and commented that President Obama “should be tried for treason.” She didn’t explain why Obama had committed treason — which is punishable by death. Her comments received a big round of applause from the audience.

Romney responded to her question, but didn’t condemn or acknowledge her comments on treason. Watch it:

While Romney can’t be held responsible for everything his supporters say, it seems reasonable to expect him to stand up to the fringe in his party, especially when he’s providing a platform for their views (it was his microphone, after all).

Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) understood this. At a town hall event in October, 2008, McCain fielded a comment from a woman who said Obama “is an Arab.” “No ma’am,” McCain said, shaking his head and taking the microphone from her hand. “He’s a decent, family man, citizen that I just happen to have disagreements with,” he said, earning a mix of applause and boos.

They aren't going to actively mouth it, but they are going to try to ride whatever waves of crazy there may be while saying, "we're not responsible for what crazy people say."

The incident did Romney more harm than good. The people who agree with that woman were already voting for him, so all that happened was that he lost a few undecideds.

It might make sense for his campaign to plant such a woman so that he could disagree with her, show some decency, distance himself from the Tea Party, etc. (as per the McCain incident that others in this thread have mentioned). Obviously, though, that didn't happen here.

If Romney's going to wimp out like this, it might make sense for US to plant a few pretend-nutjobs in his audiences, to give him more opportunities to show his spinelessness.

After the event, when the Post and the Times asked Romney's aides about what this nutzo person had to say, they responded that of course Romney didn't subscribe to her lunatic rantings. So, you know, who are you going to believe?

You could ask, "Did Romney allow this ridiculous statement to stand uncorrected because he wasn't sure exactly where the line is drawn for treason?"

You could ask, "Did Romney allow this ridiculous statement to stand uncorrected because he doesn't have the character needed to be a leader?"

You could ask, "Did Romney allow this ridiculous statement to stand uncorrected because he felt 'my people didn't make the statement and if I can benefit, so much the better'?"

You could ask, "Did Romney allow this ridiculous statement to stand uncorrected because she was a plant and that was the intention?"

If you answer 'Yes' to any of these, you can be sure this guy doesn't belong in office.

And to Romney, is there a point to the depths, you would say, this is even too low for me?

Is that they have this like rock hard erection for America and the founding fathers but they never, not once, ever check their facts. They don't know what's actually in the constitution o or our founding fathers actually said about religion (they hated religious nutjobs with a firery passion) or that there's absolutely nothing about religion in the constitution - the two times it's mentioned are both in negative context. They just make shit up and somehow they believe it to be absolute fact. Hopefully people will begin to cut through their bullshit and their stupidity will be their downfall.

I'm fairly certain the Constitution does not give the President the authority to unilaterally kill American citizens he does not like. I don't know that it rises to the level of treason, but it certainly merits more than, "meh".

People with a moral core know the difference between right and wrong and show courage when courage is required. Romney, time after time, has failed to do what is right when doing what is right was important. Romney followed that pattern during his days at Bain and now during his campaign.
