She claims they are the most comfortable pair of shoes she has ever worn. They are waterproof, so she thinks nothing of wading in the surf.

I met Bob Edwards (formerly an NPR morning guy) in an airport once, and he was wearing a pair of Mephisto's. I've kind of wanted a pair since then....I know, that makes me sound like some kind of horrible NPR groupie, but I did like the shoes.

According to Mom.
Mom had a pair of Mephistos and loved them.
I wear Italian shoes (Ferragamos, Brunos, Bally)for dressup. I usually wear sneakers or in the summer, Propet sandals from zappos.com

zappos.com has just about anything you'd want in shoes (except for Italian ones).

I have my old clogs for gardening, a newer cleaner pair for shopping, and one for dress casual (looks like a pair of standard slingback flats). They are comfortable, waterproof, and affordable. You can toss them in the washing machine or wipe them down with Armour All. In winter time, I have a pair of lined boots.

They tend to run about the same price, although you can often find deals on them at Sierra Trading Post. Haflingers are another brand to look into. They are very similar to Mephisto and Birks.

(Another reason why being poor sucks--you can't afford to do things that save money.) My husband swears by them, because he has a very hard to fit 9EEE foot. Mephisto has a really large range of sizes, and the shoes outlast cheaper brands by quite a bit.

Or is there another manufacturer who makes similarly comfortable heels? I have looking for a pair for my girlfriend, who needs to wear high heels on occasion. She has had multiple foot surgeries and her feet really suffer from regular heels.

(Maybe a little off-thread, but would appreciate any responses. Seem to be some knowledgable people here. Thanks in advance.)

Mary Jane styles (with a strap to hold them on) are as close to "comfortable" as I've ever found in a high heel. With a rounded toe, not a pointy toe.

with gel in the soles and other features that were supposed to make a very noticeable difference in comfort. Trouble is, I was not able to find these types of designs on a visit to several department stores.

I don't know if they work, and they're not cheap, but the claims are that they are out there.

they are the only heels she has owned that she can wear all day. Often wears them all day to work then leaves them on to go out, with other heels she can't get home and change fast enough..

They are expensive, but I have bought very few pair during that time, and I walk a LOT (Europe-based).

One thing you need to know: many Mephisto designs have a small metal support in the interior, so if
you fly a lot, and go through airports that don't make you take off your shoes (like many in Europe),
take them off anyway. They make the metal detectors go beep everywhere I know of except Spain. I
was just down in Spain again last night, and I think if I had driven through the metal detector in a jeep,
the thing still wouldn't have made a peep.
