How many DU'er's either hunt, or don't have a problem with hunting as long as the animal is used for food?
fadedrose
(10,044 posts)So long as hunting is done in an area where it's permitted, not on some farmer's land who doesn't hold with it.
Not as long as it's far enough from homes that bullets don't penetrate the walls or break windows.
Not as long as the animals being hunted are not on the endangered species list.
As long as it's in season and people have licenses, no problem here.
Exceptions for Native Americans/Eskimos, etc., because it was their land and they didn't ruin it. We did. They are better caretakers of the land than our Congress could ever be.

(9,951 posts)If we are lucky enough to harvest more than we need, we'll give the xtra to our local shelters to help feed the less fortunate.

(9,951 posts)but I have to agree, if I saw one, it would die, their bite is much worse than a Widow.

J/k I have no problem with responsible hunting.
Ok, that was hilarious.

(13,877 posts)meat for a long time. But I did the Mommy Van thing to McDonald's after games. I'm now a Flexitarian...a little every now and then and don't make people fix me different meals...and salads at restaurants got old. But I agree. Hunting is more humane than the slaughter houses.

(22,336 posts)It seems much kinder than eating factory farmed animals to me.
GGJohn
(9,951 posts)After seeing a couple of those factory farms and the horrendous conditions those animals live in, I swore off ever buying meat again at a supermarket, we now raise our own cattle, have free range chickens, hunt for venison, turkey, and an assortment of game birds, and we grow our own veggies and such.

(12,154 posts)I don't have a problem with people who hunt responsible. The problem is that many hunters don't understand the range of their bullets. While they may not be able to target above 200 yards the bullets travel much further with killing power. Some irresponsible hunters "sound" shoot. They hear a sound in the brush and shoot at it without knowing what made the noise, so they kill our dogs, cats, cows and goats.
And then there is the incredible noise of the gun reports during dear and dove season. We raise dairy goats and have livestock protection dogs (Great Pyrenees). The dogs hate gun fire and will not let the goats graze. All in all I wish that unless people have a real need to harvest animals by hunting for food they would do it elsewhere. It is annoying at best and dangerous at its worse.

(9,951 posts)I'm in favor of sound suppressors for hunting rifles in the vicinity of dwellings and hunting courses.
TexasProgresive
(12,154 posts)It seems to me that the ultra-sonic speed of the projectiles makes more noise than the powder charge. I could be wrong but it sounds like a mini sonic boom. This is true for my single shot air rifle which travels at 1200+fps. It makes an incredible crack.
GGJohn
(9,951 posts)like what Hollywood likes to portray in the movies.
I know some European countries require suppressors for hunting and in the US, there are states that now allow those for hunting.

(12,154 posts)http://www.shootingillustrated.com/index.php/1349/the-truth-about-suppressors/
Simply having a suppressor on the end of your gun doesnt mean its quiet enough to conceal a shot. When shooting supersonic ammunition, suppressors only reduce muzzle report while doing nothing for the bullets sonic crack as it moves downrange. Anyone along that flight path will hear the projectile pass loudly, and anyone to your rear will hear a slightly muted shot. Even subsonic projectiles arent silent. While theres no crack, they zip downrange with an unnerving sound when heard from the receiving end. The larger the projectile, the more noise it makes disturbing the air in flight. This applies to both supersonic and subsonic projectiles, though its a different sound for each. Likewise, larger-diameter suppressor bores generally equal more noise at the muzzle. The smaller the bullet and tighter the bore, the less noise escaping, all else being equal.

(12,154 posts)but is does nothing to limit the super sonic crack as these deadly projectiles pass through my 40 acres. If they were like myself and my elders who mostly managed one bullet for one deer then it would be more acceptable.

(14,733 posts)I don't have a problem with poor people who need to hunt for food doing so. I'm less sanguine about people hunting because they simply enjoy hunting, even if they then eat the meat. But since I'm not currently a vegetarian, and not planning to become one soon, I would be hypocritical to completely condemn those people. Animals are still dying to feed me.

(21,020 posts)I don't hunt, don't particularly care for it, but I understand people doing it for food.
One of my stepdaughters' husbands has been hunting deer for years but has never gotten one. He always sounds disappointed when he hasn't gotten one at the end of the season, but I think deep down inside he's not all that sad about it. In fact, I suspect that if he ever did manage to shoot one, that would be the end of his career as a hunter.

(68,644 posts)There are even better ways to get protein, we don't have to eat animals, but if we do then hunting is the better way to do it.
For us and for the animals.
I highly recommend the BBC show "Blood, Sweat, and Takeaways" if you can find copies, streaming, Netflix, whatever.

(34,195 posts)As long as the 'hunter' has gun safety training, hunts within the law (season, area, etc) I have no problem with it.
Eat the game or give it to someone who will.
I enjoyed being outdoors more than the hunting or fishing.
Then I moved on to backpacking and camping.
But there are a lot of idiots out in the woods carrying guns.

(1,695 posts)I didn't really dig it. I'm a bit of a softy. I harbor no illusions about the the meat I get at the store and feel if needed I could hunt to sustain myself. I really don't like venison and wild turkey was kinda gross. Maybe it's the way it was prepared. I've slaughtered a few chickens to eat before. That was doable for me. I had moose, too. Not impressed. I was raised on farm raised meat so it's just my preference, I suppose.
I'm not a fan of trophy hunting but understand how some can be done and helps cull herds or raise money for preservation. I'm fairly pragmatic when it comes to this stuff. I think it's stupid when people get outraged at a licensed kill of an old beast on a preservation and little to no attention is paid to the poachers out there that shun the rules and kill at whim.

(9,951 posts)Question: Do you eat meat at all?
Do you think factory farms are more humane that hunting for food?
PowerToThePeople
(9,610 posts)I do eat meat from factory farms and very well may have to change my diet because I do feel they are inhumane to the animals.
Hunting for sport I disapprove of completely, for food I am more amiable. My big reason for disapproval is that I feel all firearms should be illegal, no private citizen not partaking in civil defence duties should be allowed to keep weapons of terror and death.

(8,614 posts)But I do hunt for deer, hogs, turkeys, and dove. I use a Flint Longrifle, recurve bow, Sharps rifle and Winchester lever rifle. With all I endeavor get as close as possible for a one shot kill.

(9,951 posts)I use a Winchester lever action 30-30 for deer, elk, and the wild hogs up here and either a .22 rifle or a .410 for the smaller game.

(22,756 posts)in a family of hunters... I never did. Once I left home, I started to homestead and raised all my own meat, killed it, cleaned it and processed it myself... these days, I am vegetarian... leaning heavily towards veganism

(7,615 posts)my property backs a hunting club and quite often the dogs end up at my door. i know all the local hunters and allow them to enter my land to retrieve their dogs but not shoot in there. quite often, i get free venizon from sone of them for rounding up their dogs and letting them cross my land. So I get to eat game without having to hunt it. 😆

(2,679 posts)I kill 3-4 doe a year and mostly process them myself. I send one to be ground into burger. Those deer are what we eat most of the year.
The limit for deer in our area are 3 bucks total during bow, black powder and rifle season. And during rifle season it's 3 doe a day. That's how many we have.
I'm also a "only kill what you eat type" hunter.
