I saw this as a response, but it's so spot on, it should be read by all here!
He makes me want to vote again too!

(3,412 posts)Why should he be able to use the Dem's for his bid: he is much to
snobby until now to join.
Dems have worked hard to make the Dem Party what it is today: they are the
party Bernie and his followers dis.

(12,134 posts)Bernie has already said that he doesn't want to be the one who helps put a Bush or Walker in the White House, that's why he's running as a Democrat and not an Independent. If he doesn't get the nomination I'm quite sure he'll endorse whoever our nominee happens to be.

(9,126 posts)Here is a link to his speech to the House on the vote for the Iraq War. If this doesn't show you that he is a person who will stand up for what is right and not be swayed by political expediency, there are a lot more to show. Then Rep. Sanders not only says the war is based on shaky intelligence (at best) but points out that we need to put our efforts toward helping people at home. This is a candidate I can give my full-throated support.

(9,214 posts)Bernie will win the primaries and the General. Unaffiliated is now the largest "party." There is a reason for that and Bernie, or Warren if she were to run, are the solution to that problem.
I live in New York and if necessary will register as a Democrat again instead of unaffiliated to vote in the primaries.

cali
(114,904 posts)He's a liberal. He has a much longer and better liberal record than she does. He doesn't need to join the dems to get elected. He's a U.S. Senator, remember? He's running in the dem primary to get his vital and much needed message out there. It's nice that HRC is now speaking up on issues that Bernie has been championing for decades- for instance, police brutality, judicial and prison reform- but many of us don't trust her new found progressive economic stances. There is no ambiguity in Bernie's record or rhetoric.

And it has been a long time, a very long time.
My first presidential election was special, as it should be, but all the more so due to the recent change in voting age: it had only been a little over five years since the twenty-sixth amendment to the constitution came into effect- the right to vote at age eighteen; at nineteen years of age I was old enough to kill and die in wars for the United States government, but unlike many older brothers and sisters when they were of similar age I also held the civic right to vote. I regarded that right as a gift granted through the activism of the 1960s, and consequently considered my choice for president carefully and with respect for the opportunity. I naturally expected myself to convince others of the wisdom my candidate, and was baffled by the oppositions inability to be persuaded by my passion- which was ultimately validated by electoral victory.
On January 20th, 1977, James Earl "Jimmy" Carter, Jr. became the 39th President of the United States. I had no way of knowing at that time that he would be the last Democratic presidential candidate in the general election for whom I would hold unequivocal support.
In the ten election cycles which have unfolded since the first Apple II computers went on sale and Seattle Slew won the Triple Crown, I have vigorously and vociferously supported various candidates in presidential primaries, only to settle for the Democratic Party candidate in the general election- occasionally to the point of the evil of two lessors, as the cliche goes. I eventually became jaundiced to the routine of such concessions, and began the habit of voting my conscience- basing my choice on the policies, political positions and job performance of ALL the candidates running in the general election.
As time and circumstances have worn me down, the failures of candidates I had held in esteem to win the highest office in the land or even sway the national discourse, and my own failure to persuade others to share my values, I have lost the motivation to engage others politically. I eventually lost my youthful narcissism, and developed the maturity- however overdue- to realize that anyone of political persuasion holds their beliefs with the same adamant conviction as myself, reducing political discourse to a pointless exercise in ego externalization.
Similarly, I no longer desire or require external validation for opinions, positions or allegiances that I hold; my life is my own and I am no longer burdened with the need for approbation.
I have recently been given a reason to support a presidential candidate who manifests the values and convictions which I share- without equivocation; one who demonstrates a history of working for agendas from which I can directly benefit. Am I to abandon this opportunity based on a cynical calculation of viability or be dissuaded by the contumelies of others?
I dont think so, not when, Bernie makes me *want* to vote!
Fantastic Anarchist

(2,104 posts)Something the younger voters will enjoy too. They find much less to like than we do! This is a great things. And, aging America will appreciate his stance on soc sec and medicare, AND VA care. Wanting to vote again, means so many positive things! It was hidden as a response and look at it now!!!

(7,309 posts)And yes, I agree with your post. The youth and old can vote the message and not the person (our a little of both since he's genuine).
This is very important because people I've talked to who would've never voted for him like him because he is so different from the rest. They might not agree with his positions, but they may vote for him to get rid of the corruption.

Buns_of_Fire
(17,781 posts)the republican party will also draft him to be THEIR candidate, too!
He will then win the presidency and EVERY electoral vote -- plus three more that we'd forgotten were there. Statistics will show that this will be the first election in US history with 99% participation. The Kook Brothers, Jamie Dimon, Lloyd Blankfein, DICK Cheney, Rafael Cruz, and Louie Gohmert immediately leave the country and apply for political asylum in China -- which rejects them, arrests them, and exports them back to the US as part of a shipment of bamboo shoots (look for processing codes ending in RXXX on the cans).
Unfortunately, during his inaugural speech, he strips off his mask, revealing that he's really Cthulhu, and proceeds to eat both houses of congress, alphabetically, by state. (I shrug. All candidates have a few flaws.)
Granted, it MIGHT not play out exactly like that.
But it's surely going to be nice to go to the polling place and actually vote FOR someone, for a change.
