A Canadian couple experienced a very upsetting homecoming after discovering that short-term renters had destroyed their house in just one weekend.
Mark and Star King rented out their Calgary home on Airbnb last weekend to what they believed were four adults in town for a wedding. But when neighbors began calling to report a party, it was clear this wasnt just a wedding weekend.
According to CTV News, one neighbor told police a bus had stopped outside the house letting out a hundred partygoers. Multiple noise complaints were also filed.

When they were finally able to enter their home, they found significant damage throughout $50,000 to $75,000 worth, according to Calgary law enforcement officials including broken furniture, piles of garbage, broken glass and, perhaps most disturbing, various bodily fluids.

(5,311 posts)...they help to drive up the rental rates in areas where homeowners use Air BnB to quadruple their profits over renting to local community members who need long-term rentals.
Sorry about the Canadian couple whose home was trashed, but I'm guessing they won't be going through Air BnB to rent out their place again, anytime soon.

(5,311 posts)...who never damage the property they're renting, but having local community members as renters is probably less likely to cause damage than a weekend fling by party animals from out of the area.
If you are renting month to month or on a year or more lease, you're probably less likely to trash the place, since you need to live there for more than a few days or so, and who wants to live in a trashed home?
Primarily, though, I object to Air BnB because of the way their business model drives up the rents for renters who reside in a given community.

(12,017 posts)that will be put into place here and the house will be repaired and probably be in better shape than it was before the party hounds did their damage.
that said, i would not hesitate to use the services of something like AirBNB or one of its competitors provided the coverage is available. however, i would NEVER allow my HOME to be used in this way... only a property that i had purchased as an investment for this very purpose. too much risk to heirlooms and such that i could just not tolerate.
