This could not have been a part of anyone’s plan.

Not the Nebraska State Patrol trooper who watched Thursday from the side of Interstate 80 as his cruiser sped from a traffic stop without him. Not the suspect who was behind the wheel.

As the trooper searched a 2015 Toyota Camry after its driver, Jacob J. Barrickman, had been stopped about 3:30 p.m. for speeding in North Platte, the 24-year-old man, who had been handcuffed and placed in the front passenger seat of the cruiser, drove off, patrol spokeswoman Deb Collins said.

A woman, also handcuffed, who had been a passenger in the Camry was in the back seat of the commandeered cruiser.
