This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by seabeyond (a host of the General Discussion forum).

NEW STANDARD AT DU:

It's OK to use derogatory terms for ethnic groups/nationalities, as long as they're European:

"The Krauts are inciting some long-standing anti-German resentment in Greece..."
http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1014&pid=116059

REASON FOR ALERT:

This post is disruptive, hurtful, rude, insensitive, over-the-top, or otherwise inappropriate. (See <a href="http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=aboutus#communitystandards" target="_blank">Community Standards</a>.)

YOUR COMMENTS:

Krauts?

Tue May 8, 2012, 05:16 PM

Here are the results from a jury I served on last night that voted to keep a post using the word "darkies":

At Tue May 8, 2012, 02:13 AM an alert was sent on the following post:

So you think that the white teachers in those schools are complicit
http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1002&pid=657644

REASON FOR ALERT:

This post is disruptive, hurtful, rude, insensitive, over-the-top, or otherwise inappropriate. (See <a href="http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=aboutus#communitystandards" target="_blank">Community Standards</a>.)

ALERTER'S COMMENTS:

"darkies"????

You served on a randomly-selected Jury of DU members which reviewed this post. The review was completed at Tue May 8, 2012, 02:22 AM, and the Jury voted 2-4 to LEAVE IT.

Juror #1 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: While using the term darkies is a bit rude I feel the question itself is allowable.
Juror #2 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: No explanation given
Juror #3 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: No explanation given
Juror #4 voted to HIDE IT and said: Due to the OP, I don't think it was intended as the alerter took it, but as a crude representation of a point in the article. Sometimes that crude in your face wording sort of open eyes a bit
Juror #5 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: I think the term is used satirically to mock the slavery analogy in the OP. Maybe certain words shouldn't be said even in that context. Tough call, but I don't see racist intent in this post.
Juror #6 voted to HIDE IT and said: This kind of language should be unacceptable here, no matter what kind of point the poster was trying to make. And the next sentence suggests it may not have been benign, either.

Thank you very much for participating in our Jury system, and we hope you will be able to participate again in the future.

I was juror No. 6, and outnumbered, unfortunately.

An ethnic slur against someone who's had all the advantages that being of that category entails does not have the sting that a similar slur against someone against whom the tables are stacked.

If you or your group are in NO POSITION to fight back that slur is especially hurtful.
