Babies! Why the heck not? The new British princess (and therefore appropriate for GD)

How does she do it? Speedy Kate Middleton emerges with new baby daughter looking immaculate - just 12 hours after she arrived at hospital and 10 hours after giving birth to 8lb 3oz second child
Prince William and Kate Middleton have taken their new daughter home just hours after she was born today
Prince George offered a shy wave as he arrived at the Lindo Wing this afternoon to meet his little sister
It is the first time George has been seen in the UK publicly since his own birth at the hospital in 2013
Kate, 33, gave birth to a baby girl at 8.34am less than three hours after being admitted to the Lindo Wing

(90,010 posts)We haven't had a Princess Victoria for awhile...
But I do like Alexandra, and what goes well with Alexandra? And has a pedigree?
Let's see, Elizabeth of course
Diana - probably inevitable
Alexandra - in many royal lines
Margaret - QE2's late sister
Mary - QU2's grandmother-in-law - one of those one with the boat named after her
Charlotte - in many royal lines as is, and as a tip of the hat to Will's father
Anne - their grandpa Charles' sister and farther up the family tree
Alice - as above
Augusta - farther up the family tree, in the House of Hanover
Caroline, Maria, Frederica, even Amelia and Cecilia - same as Augusta
Sophia - very Hanoverian. Sophie is their great uncle Edward's commoner wife's name.
Beatrice - in House of Windsor line but also, one of Prince Andrew's daughters (with Eugenie - and I don't at the moment see where they got the name Eugenie). They're the ones with the crazy "fascinator" hats.
I myself am just fascinated by the British royals. The whole thing. Can't help myself. I understand about the perceptions of the monarchy in general. But I dunno - maybe it's like playing a grown-up version of Barbie or something. FASCINATED by it. And I'm also rather pleased that the next full-on Queen of England (Camilla doesn't get that title in any shape or form, regardless when or how Charles becomes king) is a brunette.

(90,010 posts)I blew up like the Goodyear blimp. I literally turned into a water balloon. Even after birth I still looked and felt as though I had padding on every inch of me. And then as soon as we got home, I lost 30 pounds of water weight in about a week! Still a total physical wreck though.
She does look great! I like her. She seems to be a good thing for her husband and his still-stuffy family. And I don't even care that they're a little stuffy. Still fun. And great clothes, jewels, trappings, old-world pomp & circumstance, even the family drama. Still fun.
I'm sorry. Sometimes you've just gotta make a little bit of room for frippery.
laundry_queen
(8,646 posts)With my first I had a c-section, it was 90 degrees (no air conditioning where I was living - either in our home or the hospital) and my lower body blew up. I was puffy before but afterwards I had to get a pair of men's sandals to wear. I stayed puffy for 2 weeks or so afterward. My next was also born in the summer. While I felt fabulous (no c-section, went home less than 12 hours later) I was still all blown up. My other 2 kids were mercifully born in early spring when it was still very cold here. Not as much swelling, thankfully, even though both were c-sections. with my last birth, I was in my pre-pregnancy jeans in 8 days. Had I not had a c-section, I probably could've pulled off some heels. But my face looked like death. I lost a lot of blood and had 2 black eyes for a week. Every birth is so different.
Kate does look great. I agree, I like a little bit of frippery now and then. And babies! I can always make time for looking at adorable babies. Good luck to the second time parents!

(90,010 posts)I could not flex my ankles. My skin was SHINY. It was that stretched. Seriously creepy!!! You know those Kim Kartrashian pregnancy photos? Her pudgy feet and ankles, her pudgy sausage fingers? Huge I was worse. You know those moments, usually when one is sunburned, where you can push your index finger into your swollen flesh and it creates a pit where the fingertip probed? And then it takes a few moments for the skin to plump back out again? My WHOLE BODY was like that. Criminy.
I was covering the Zsa Zsa Gabor cop-slapping trial in the last two weeks of my first pregnancy. It was packed with reporters and camera crews and paparazzi. There was no place to sit in the long marble hall where we press people were relegated while the court proceedings went on. Some self-involved individuals who wouldn't give the huge, bloated, miserable-looking pregnant woman a seat. So I sat on the cold hard marble floor. Have to admit - that cold smooth marble felt SOOOOOOO good and SOOOOOO soothing, because I was burning up. My temperature was always higher than normal, and I felt hot and sticky all the damn time! So I'd sit on the floor til time to try to struggle to my feet - sometimes I had help there.
And there was one time when I looked at the side of my calf - the side that had been cooling against the cold marble floor. My leg was AS FLAT AS THE FLOOR! It had just pressed to the shape of what it was pressed against, and so I had this misshapen leg that was totally flat all the way down one side. CREEPY! And it stung. My skin stung. All the time. I felt like there was a hive of overheated bees working triple-time inside, or some big electric generator like you always saw appearing on Popeye's big arm muscle when he flexed it after eating a can of spinach. I got so swollen I had to have rings cut off. I ripped through the leather AND stitching around the throat of the only two pairs of decent low-heeled leather work pumps I had that still fit me.
I was ridiculous-looking. Could barely fit behind the steering wheel of my car, and toward the end I did NOT fit. My husband had to drive me to and from work. I could barely move. My arms and legs hurt. Stung. My joints weren't working right. My ankles and knees complained all the time. Simple breathing was hard. I was out of breath all the time. Everything ached. I thought I smelled odd, too - I always seemed to detect a vague scent of odd warm buttered milk around me all the time. I couldn't walk right. Couldn't keep up with people. Sure couldn't sleep, either. I felt like some beached elephant seal. I was a total monstrosity. Never had a minute's worth of morning sickness. But man - toward the fourth month - BALLOON TIME! I sometimes wondered, if somebody stuck a pin in me, would I fly around the room? Actually, with the water retention, it was more likely that I'd flood the place!
Same thing happened the second time. Just abnormally weird, what was happening to me. I was already pro-choice. But going through that, twice, made me ARDENTLY pro-choice. In the EXTREME. It confirmed for me beyond ANY doubt that NO woman should have to go through anything like that unless she chooses to!

(8,646 posts)I had a similar experience with the swelling in my first 2 pregnancies. With my second pregnancy (due in Sept, had her in August and it was HOT all summer) I discovered our local pool. They ran the pool quite cold. I went there everyday in my last month. It helped.
I had the shiny skin, the indents, being overheated - all of that. I also couldn't breathe well (and I have asthma so it made it worse). I had miserable pregnancies. My third pregnancy I didn't swell much - but I had 9 months of morning sickness and went 2 weeks overdue and had a 9lb11oz baby (my biggest). My last pregnancy, I felt great, and didn't swell, but my pubic bone separated and I couldn't walk. It was always something. And all 4 pregnancies I had HORRID acne. One of my young co-workers was talking about how her mother has pictures of her pregnancies and she finds how her mom looked shocking - she said, "OMG, she looks like she wants to simultaneously die and kill someone". I can relate. Some of us aren't very 'glowy' during pregnancy. And I had difficult deliveries too.
It's a good thing that my kids were definitely worth it, LOL. But I agree, no one should EVER be forced to go through that. It would be inhumane.

(90,010 posts)I keep looking at some of these lovely CON men who are so anxious to assert for themselves all the sovereignty and mastery of OUR bodies, NOT their own bodies, mind you, but OUR bodies, and wonder - "how would YOU feel if YOU had to squeeze a watermelon-size mass out of that little bitty hole?" And some of you hardliners would even deny us anesthesia or spinal blocks or other pain relief - because as women you believe it's our cross to bear, to atone for the Sins of Eve. We're SUPPOSED to have pain. And I suppose we're supposed to like it, too, because it's our lot in life and it's what we deserve - daughters of Eve that we are.
I remember when I was pregnant, reading that shit. Realizing that there were actual forces in this country who fought to deny women any pain relief during labor, be it epidural or anything taken orally. We women did not deserve such relief, they argued. It was what God said we were doomed to have to endure - because of the Sins of Eve. FORCRYINGOUTLOUD!!!! And that was relatively recent in modern times. Like back in the 1800s and early 1900s. As soon as pain relieving options were available, there were assholes fighting to prevent our access to them.

What the hell? Set down the protests and the outrage for a minute, and take a deep breath and just find something nice to think about. YES the fucking country is falling apart. YES Baltimore is on lockdown. YES it's two white people and their white baby. AND their position of privilege, too. Meh - so what? Seems to me it gives the rest of us a break, maybe a brief moment of living vicariously. Who doesn't like to see a happy little family, 'eh? I've spent the past two weeks enjoying my little birdie family, even in the midst of all the news madness. Impractical as hell and I never could even touch a one of 'em. But it's been great! Three deaths of people I love, a cardiac bypass for Mr. Bear, a case of sciatica that makes me fear I'll be unable to live my life the way I want and enough death and destruction in the news to keep me trying to keep from sinking. (23,156 posts)I'm no expert, but I'm going to guess that the new princess's first name will not be Elizabeth. Notice that their son's first name was not the same as any living paternal relative. King George VI, Queen Elizabeth's father, died in 1952.
His full name is George Alexander Louis.
So I'm also going to guess that none of the princess's names will be Alexandria. I think, that as with their son, they'll reach farther back to Mary, or Victoria. But I wouldn't bet on any specific name. They certainly have lots to choose from.
