4 reasons why environmental orgs oppose the TPP:

:

1) The USTR has never brought an enforcement case against a country which has violated environmental provisions in a free
trade agreement.

2) They have concluded that some of the provisions in the environmental chapter draft (leaked 1/14) are actually a step back (joint analysis from the World Wildlife Fund, Natural Resources Defense Council and The Sierra Club)

3) concerns that it will increase fracking

4) Increased Corporate rights leading to more decisions like the March 17, 2015 ruling against Canada regarding open pit mining.

There's more- including the fact that there is nothing in the tpp that addresses climate change

by opponents and invariably avoid them when offered.

Of course when they do respond, they make the claim that the leaked draft chapters are meaningless, which as I pointed out, is like saying the dress rehearsal of a play has no bearing on what the audience will see on opening night.

then it's important to take the time to get it done right. Of course if that happened, it would never pass.

And I could live with that.

TPP's environmental impact has to be a major part of the discussion.

8. part of the reason I posted this is the happy checkpoint propaganda list

from the WH that someone posted here. It's such obvious propaganda. I don't understand why anyone would buy purported objective information from those pushing a proposal.

9. How weak is enforcement language in the leaked environmental chapter? Very

Take this, for example:

Fisheries Management Systems, including Shark Finning

Article SS.16.3 says that each Party “shall seek to operate a fisheries management system . . .
that is designed to prevent overfishing and overcapacity...” (emphasis added)
and references the key international instruments. However, Article SS.16.4,
which addresses fisheries by catch, does not
contain any clear requirements for a ban on shark finning, despite the role of TPP countries as
shark fishing nations and traders in shark fins, and the requirement under U.S. law that it seek
such bans from other countries.
