I'm not an attorney or constitutional scholar. However, I believe the purpose of being able to pass amendments to a constitution is to alter it. So if the citizens decide to alter the NC Constitution and remove a right it originally granted I believe the amendment process is how it's done.

We wouldn't blink an eye if their original constitution had an article ensuring blacks could be owned and denied the vote and then a referendum came up like Prop 1 and nullified that.

We may not like it but we have to all play by the same rules.

And just for background I am a gay man with friends in Charlotte who are partners with adopted kids. I am really scared about what this means for them.

However, there is the lost hope for the immediate future on their legal status. That is the cruelty of it. My son is particularly incensed about this vote. He says he will leave the state and he said he is going to tell his mom he is no longer Catholic (and he is straight). The young will save the state in the future but the problem is with people affected now.
