The City of Omaha is on the hook for a $350,000 bill because police arrested a shooting victim last year as he was being treated in the hospital.
City Council members said they were not happy about approving a payment to Alegent Creighton Health for the treatment of Brian Hanzlik-Stuart.
Hanzlik-Stuart was shot Oct. 10 in Omaha and taken to Creighton University Medical Center in critical condition. Police found that he had two outstanding warrants: One for failing to appear in court in Iowa on a drug charge and another for leaving work release in Nebraska.
And, Deputy City Attorney Tom Mumgaard said, police initially didnt know what role Hanzlik-Stuart played in the shooting. So officers arrested him on the warrants.
