(8,267 posts)to stand up for equal rights... BIG fail for Mr. Obama.

(8,267 posts)I wrote that comment before Mr. Obama 'reversed' his position. I am thrilled he has done so, but I think it's a classic case of 'better late than never.'

(13,141 posts)thinking, listened to many people, considered all the politics,
consulted his heart and conscience, and found his own clarity,
which he voiced today. It is evolution.

(8,267 posts)And, it's worth noting that his reversal/evolution is a courageous act, coming as it does before the election.
As most of us anticipated, the right wing blogosphere is bloviating viciously, predicting President Obama will lose because he has 'galvanized the evangelicals.' (They have a rather inflated opinion of their numbers...)

(13,141 posts)not confined at all to the LGBT community.
I loved his words, how honestly he presented the situation.
Anyone with half a heart has got to recognize he's got a point.
Some people choose the whiny nasty little voices in their heads,
the ones that turn their hearts into a dry empty pit.
That's a choice, ie to be in hell. People create that hell for
themselves, via hate. People choose hate, that's all they
see wherever they look: hate-worthy people places and
things.
What a world!

(34,582 posts)seriously, he could have just come out and diplomatically said that Joe was running his mouth unauthorized. He made a definitive statement in an election year- that took a little backbone, IMO.

(8,267 posts)backbone, moxie, cajones, and every other synonym for courage you can imagine.
(Did you see the OP about Romney's anti-gay bullying whilst he was still a student?)

(15,882 posts)so this whole "wait 'em out" cause they are dying off meme - smacks of ageism, false hope. The jokes and disrespect I hear in reference to homosexuality often come from younger people, cops, hospital workers, others that won't be dead when your children are living in the world. Kids are more open minded, but they have always been so, in the decades I have lived through. Hate is just awfully easy to teach, and it seems easier for many to be "liberal" when they are young and someone else is paying all the bills.
Those folks who voted on the question in NC include not only people who used to wear peace signs and bell bottoms, but their kids. Santorum is hardly a senior, and there are a lot of people with who will do their best to hurt others regardless of the laws passed.
Thanks for the 'toons though

(204,779 posts)The topic immediately brought this to mind. I remember seeing it on one of the news shows, Jon Stewart or Bill Maher. And it made a powerful impression.
