Sanders strong support of gun rights should be comforting to 2nd amendment advocates. Is he the choice of Democratic guns rights voters? Also, will his passionate support of weapons peel off republicans that are persuadable on economic and social issues?

(9,951 posts)he's my choice for the nomination and President.
I think he'll peel off a whole lot of pro 2A Ind. and maybe some sane R's, if there are any left.
And I agree.

(774 posts)I'm disappointed with his position on an "assault weapons" and "high capacity" magazines ban", but...
at least he's better than the alternative.

(34,170 posts)Being a gun guy I always knew about Vermonts and Bernies stances on gun, but I'm learning more about Bernie and I'm beginning to believe in the possibility of a Sanders presidency.

(8,352 posts)however, that is not the main reason I am voting for him. It would not be a deal breaker either way given his other domestic, economic, and foreign policy positions.
I believe he will peel off some moderate Republicans that are more 'liberal' on social issues and are supporters of gun rights.

(18,654 posts)I want to see all of the candidates, hear what they have to say on the issues and consider their voting history. Gun control will be about #9 or 10 on the list of things I am interested in. I will vote in the primary for the candidate that best fits my positions.
In the general election I will vote for the Democratic nominee.

(9,086 posts)WASHINGTON, April 17 Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) today voted for expanded background checks on gun buyers and for a ban on assault weapons but the Senate rejected those central planks of legislation inspired by the shootings of 20 first-grade students and six teachers in Newtown, Conn.
Nobody believes that gun control by itself is going to end the horrors we have seen in Newtown, Conn., Aurora, Colo., Blacksburg, Va., Tucson, Ariz. and other American communities, Sanders said. There is a growing consensus, however, in Vermont and across America that we have got to do as much as we can to end the cold-blooded, mass murders of innocent people. I believe very strongly that we also have got to address the mental health crisis in our country and make certain that help is available for people who may be a danger to themselves and others, Sanders added.
The amendment on expanded background checks needed 60 votes to pass but only 54 senators voted for it. To my mind it makes common sense to keep these weapons out of the hands of people with criminal records or mental health histories, Sanders said.
Under current federal law, background checks are not performed for tens of thousands of sales up to 40 percent of all gun transfers at gun shows or over the Internet. The amendment would have required background checks for all gun sales in commercial settings regardless of whether the seller is a licensed dealer. The compromise proposal would have exempted sales between family, friends, and neighbors.

Also, despite right-wing fear mongering, Democrats are not trying to disarm the population. Well maybe some are. But most Democrats support common sense gun regulations.
