Labour suffered heavy losses at the hands of the SNP, with the Tories forecast to achieve a majority.
In a speech in London, Mr Miliband said it was "time for someone else" to take over the leadership and that he was "truly sorry" he did not succeed.
Shadow chancellor Ed Balls was among the party's big-name casualties.
It also lost its election campaign chief Douglas Alexander and its leader in Scotland Jim Murphy.

(101,294 posts)The Conservatives have won an absolute majority - 331 seats to Labour's 232. Even if Labour had won every single Scottish seat, that would just give them another 58 - still 41 seats behind.
Labour won 10 seats from the Tories - and they also lost 8 to them. The Lib Dem vote collapsed; the SNP took 10 seats from them, Labour 12, and the Tories 27.

Labour failed to win enough from the Tories, and the Tories succeeded in taking too many Lib Dem seats.

Using "fear, nationalism and 'us vs them'" sounds like standard republican tactics. Don't solve a country's problems by going after the 1% who cause them. Blame them on 'others', preferable foreigners, who can be feared and excluded. Those tactics seem to be effective on both sides of the Atlantic.
