Earlier this year, Fox News hyped the rise in gasoline prices, blaming President Obama even though experts agree that worldwide market factors, not U.S. policies, set gas prices. So what is Fox saying now that gas prices are falling?
Seriously.
You know who else sees the drop in gas prices as a bad thing? Republican strategists who were hoping to reap the political benefits of high gas prices at the polls this year.

The GOPs plan to blame Obamas policies for rising gasoline prices has run into one small bump in the road. Gasoline prices have dropped $0.15 a gallon in the past month, to $3.79 per gallon this week, down from its peak of $3.94 in early April, according to The Energy Information Administration.

Say it with me: Republicans suck!
but with higher prices, the SUVs start getting dumped and the smaller, more fuel efficient cars start to be purchased.
A lot of people I know can't afford to drive their big SUVs and Trucks and are now carpooling or buying smaller cars. I don't see how a drop in prices will get the same results

...the first group already changed the habit permanently. The second group knows, and it will take a hell of a lot more than a few cents to revert to bad habits.
Another thing, vehicles are becoming more fuel efficient. IOW, Fox is full of shit.
What I don't understand is the need to use this bullshit report by Fox and a slight drop in gas prices to make a point about "fuel consumption." It's almost in tacit agreement with the "bad thing" claim.

(64,988 posts)The "dumping" of SUV's is overhyped. Lots of people couldn't afford to, since they overspent on their beast.
Those that could dumped them, and then others bought them as cheap used cars. So, the SUV's weren't dumped at all. They just have different owners now.
And, you're right: The monofocus on consumption ends up making strange bedfellows because posters, like the one to whom you were responding, didn't really think things through. Demand is not really down that much, so high gas prices didn't affect driving as much as it inhibited the economy because people were not spending that extra money on other discretionary items.
High gas prices are bad for everyone, and low gas prices don't stimulate driving. The data just doesn't exist.

(2,307 posts)Every time I think the SUV is destined to a display in the Natural History Museum next to the T-Rex it rises from it's ashes like a phoenix.
What I am concerned about is the price which causes them to be "endangered" keep going up.
I remember when gas hit the outrageous price of $1, $2, $2.50, $3, and $3.50 or more. Each time the SUV (large land yacht before the SUV) is deemed doomed then prices fall a little, usually just about 25% of the increase and they are back as strong as ever.
Also, as the SUV is on its death bed people buy small cars and they are the envy of the party but they quickly become the wallflower.
I ordered a smart during one of the time periods that the SUV was on the "endangered" list by the time it was delivered the SUV was strong and well, and many people thought I was crazy to drive such a small, two seat car. Recently, I have had people with SUVs next to me at the gas pumps show envy for my being able to leave without having to mortgage my house to pay for my gas. I guess I soon will be thought of as crazy again.

(17,505 posts)Well.... who championed the SUV? Who "allowed" it to even be a "thing"... just to get around laws applied to trucks? Who told us to go spend like we always have?
It wasn't the Dems.

(558 posts)That is the most important reason why i want to see gas prices drop.
I see how much higher gas prices hurt people with low income jobs who have to travel pretty far. Not everyone can change their habits and buy a vehicle on a whim which gets much better gas prices.

(30,807 posts)This must have been dusted off from when the gas prices were soaring under W.
Yes, it turned out that high gas prices were actually a good thing.
Then they got bad again when it happened to Obama.
Fox must be pleased to have a camera-ready story that their dim-witted viewers will not remember seeing before.

(19,233 posts)And why are oil prices falling? Because Europe is re-entering recession and US and Chinese economic output is slowing.
It's a potential sign that global demand for oil is dropping like it did in 2008, which would indicate another global recession might be in the making.

That is who fox is really broadcasting for afterall when they ask 'are lower gas prices a bad thing'.. I thought the GOP were a little subdued and fair to Obama when oil prices were high. Didn't they say it wasn't his fault? Seems the rich truly are disconnected from regular Americans who find high gas prices hard to live with. Seems fox really is the propaganda arm of the rich investors. Seems the GOP wants high gas prices for more than just political reasons: they have their investment portfolios to worry about.

(4,558 posts)Yes, gas cost $1.84 when Obama took office, but we had been paying the highest prices in history up until the second half of 2008. As the election neared, prices mysteriously plummeted. It seems very well orchestrated to me.
Prices never returned to those record Bush era highs under Obama.
