I posted this not so much because of the defacing story, but for what else the story reveals. Namely that statues honoring confederate leaders are on the rise. If you don't mind vomiting your dinner, click on the story and read what the Confederate Sons of America spokersperson Marshall Davis (relation?).
DALLAS (AP) -- Pity Jefferson Davis, if you will. Vandals have defaced his statue on the University of Texas campus, most recently with the words "Davis must fall" and "Emancipate UT." Student leaders are also seeking to remove from the Austin campus the century-old statue that recognizes the president of the Confederacy.

But as students take aim at Davis, the number of sites in Texas on public and private land that honor the Confederacy is growing - despite the opposition of the NAACP and others. Supporters cite their right to memorialize Confederate veterans and their role in Texas history, while opponents argue the memorials are too often insensitive or antagonistic, while having the backing of public institutions like UT.
The Texas Historical Commission has recognized more than 1,000 such sites from far South Texas to the upper reaches of the Panhandle. And the Sons of Confederate Veterans are planning others, including a 10-foot obelisk a few miles from the Davis statue to honor about 450 Confederate soldiers buried at the city-owned Oakwood Cemetery.

Besides the obelisk, other recent projects include a Confederate memorial along Interstate 10 in the East Texas city of Orange that will feature 32 waving flags representing Texas regiments of the Confederate army, along with 13 columns for each Confederate state. That project began after a Confederate Veterans Memorial Plaza was unveiled two years ago in downtown Palestine, near what the NAACP says was the site of a "hanging tree."

(112,168 posts)the vandals wrote "Davis must fall" on the statue, but nothing was mentioned about "Emancipate UT". I also keep up with the Austin American-Statesman, the UT-Daily Texan and KUT (Web news coverage) on a daily basis and haven't seen any other vandalism since the stories that I posted last month. I noticed that the story is getting picked up by other major media outlets like the Guardian with the AP story, but I lean towards it being more recycled news. AP should have provided more details since there have been at least two vandalism incidents this year.

(9,462 posts)on so many levels.I think without public awareness they will put up statues everywhere and it will be very difficult to take them down. Did you read the sentence from the spokesman for Sons of the Confederacy where he said something about other groups (he was referring to NAACP) honoring their "heroes" and why couldn't they?
OMG I wanted to vomit. I think these folks are trying to plant seeds in people's minds that secession is a good thing and people who promote secession are "heroes". They're getting ready for Civil War 2.0.

Anyway, I agree it's more grist for the secessionist mill from the grifters.

(16,845 posts)It's near the beach and it was heavily damaged by Katrina. They spent a fortune restoring it. There's a museum there and a cemetery for Confederate veterans. They've even built a Presidential library out there. I can only imagine what a scandal it would be if somebody went on the property and vandalized the place. He or she would get a stiff sentence if they were caught.
