Log Cabin Republicans On Obama: ‘Offensive And Callous’

The Log Cabin Republicans issued the following statement on news of President Obama’s endorsement of same-sex marriage:

“That the president has chosen today, when LGBT Americans are mourning the passage of Amendment One, to finally speak up for marriage equality is offensive and callous,” said R. Clarke Cooper, Log Cabin Republicans Executive Director. “Log Cabin Republicans appreciate that President Obama has finally come in line with leaders like Vice President Dick Cheney on this issue, but LGBT Americans are right to be angry that this calculated announcement comes too late to be of any use to the people of North Carolina, or any of the other states that have addressed this issue on his watch. This administration has manipulated LGBT families for political gain as much as anybody, and after his campaign’s ridiculous contortions to deny support for marriage equality this week he does not deserve praise for an announcement that comes a day late and a dollar short.”

I spit out my coffee reading Dick Cheney's name.

I totally forgot that marriage equality being part of the 2004 RNC/9-11 platform.

At a campaign rally in this Mississippi River town, Cheney spoke supportively about gay relationships, saying “freedom means freedom for everyone,” when asked about his stand on gay marriage.

“Lynne and I have a gay daughter, so it’s an issue our family is very familiar with,” Cheney told an audience that included his daughter. “With the respect to the question of relationships, my general view is freedom means freedom for everyone. ... People ought to be free to enter into any kind of relationship they want to.

“The question that comes up with the issue of marriage is what kind of official sanction or approval is going to be granted by government? Historically, that’s been a relationship that has been handled by the states. The states have made that fundamental decision of what constitutes a marriage,” he said.

His daughter is gay.

And this is the (only) reason that Dick Cheney is on the right side of the issue.

The one common factor that unites all republicans is that they have zero empathy. They cannot understand a problem unless they themselves, or someone very close to them is undergoing that exact problem.

While I'm happy that Dick Cheney doesn't hate his daughter, I'm not going to give him too much credit for it.

base, blanket discrimination perpetuated by the likes of Mitt Romney & the modern day GOP, what does that say about you?

If you actively seek out discrimination on a very hateful level, aren't you embracing it? Aren't you effectively saying that you want, deserve and enjoy it?

The Republican Party doesn't skirt around the issue, it doesn't advocate a humane and understanding method, a purely ideological disagreement. It fans the flames of fear and loathing. If that is what you reap, it is surely what you'll sow.

Who in NC would have changed their vote simply because of the POTUS' opinion? The same people who would vote against equality would probably not think much of the President's opinion.

This is the dumb, right here. And since when was Cheney the great champion of LGBT? What was it he said about his daughter's wedding? I think he didn't go? And his daughter's level of privilege is so high it may actually not matter.

Even if Obama had come out the day before the vote and had set himself on fire while endorsing gay marriage, does anyone think Republican loons of North Carolina would have stopped voting like Republican loons? Shouldn't Log Cabiners be blaming their fellow Republicans? If Obama is offensive and callous, what should that make North Carolina Republicans in their eyes? These righties get more psychotic every day.
