(829 posts)VA has open primaries, so you don't have to register as a Republican to vote in their primary
Also I am hearing that only Mitt Romney and Ron Paul made the ballot.

(36,974 posts)apparently TONS of the signature Perry submitted were NOT 'registered voters', so he's not going to be on the ballot.
Below is a comment from Freeperville:
ABC Radio just claimed that the 11,911 signatures were submitted but VA is claiming that less than 10K of those signatures belong to REGISTERED voters.

(45,319 posts)What of the Senate race and House and other offices? No Presidential Primary might not mean no Democratic Primary at all, I know nothing of their election methods there....don't they nominate candidates for other offices? How does it work?

(36,974 posts)The same people that had the right to run against The President also had a right to not run.
Apparently everyone chose to use their 'right' to not run.
We can't force folks to run for President if they don't want to

(14,498 posts)That there is no viable opponent is beside the point. That there is significant disenchantment within the party is not.

(36,974 posts)2012 will not be like 2008. We have a Democratic incumbent president that the polls say the majority of Democrats think should be re-elected.
It's better for Obama to be focusing (and spending time, energy, money) on the General Election instead of primaries that he would win anyway.

(9,214 posts)As with any title that requires a lot of work, such as a doctorate, I feel it is disrespectful not to use the title, and I am not a fan of President Obama. As for the last person to hold the position, I was proud of myself for never using the word President in the same sentence with his name. I considered that to be disrespectful, which was intentional.
As for the primary, why do you think less choice is better? Have you already decided who you will vote for without knowing everyone that is running? Sounds like you plan to vote for a party instead of the best person.

(82,383 posts)That's how it works.
Now the general election is the only vote where Virginians can express displeasure with Obama and there's not vote to say "we prefer a Democrat but THIS is the type of Democrat we want".

(9,253 posts)Darcy Richardson: Why Im Running for President
by Darcy G. Richardson · October 26, 2011
While it was my fervent hope that a candidate of national stature and credibility would challenge President Obama in the 2012 Democratic primaries, I have entered my name in New Hampshires first-in-the-nation primary to offer my fellow disillusioned Democrats a choice.
The growing sense of political hopelessness, frustration and alienation symbolized in the fledgling Occupy Wall Street movement represents a much larger national trend.
I hope that my candidacy, as limited as it may turn out to be, might in some small measure restore a belief in American politics and American government, reinforcing the notion that real change can be achieved at the ballot box.
In addition to New Hampshire, I intend to enter several other Democratic primaries, including my birthplace of Pennsylvania, which votes in late April.
