A 43-year-old man was found hanging from a tree Monday morning behind this house in Greensboro, Georgia. Authorities are treating this as a homicide investigation.
Police in Greene County, Georgia, found a black man hanging from a tree Monday morning.
A spokesperson for the Greensboro Police Department confirmed the hanging death to Atlanta reporter Nathalie Pozo.
Witnesses who spotted the man called the authorities, which prompted the discovery. While the name of the man who was found has not yet been released, authorities said he did not live in the house where he was discovered.

(17,997 posts)I am sure this will also be labeled a suicide. Because I am sure people who want to end their lives do it outside, from a tree.
This is horrible. Just horrible

(17,997 posts)I thought there was "we're iinvestigating it as a homicide" for a minute before they went to suicide
At least social media is helping to cause some change

(17,997 posts)Obviously, it's about race. But the race of the one in power seems to be less important than the power itself

(34,582 posts)That the earlier hanging you referenced, and was determined suicide, was deemed so by an African American sheriff. Maybe I, naively, trust him a little more than a white sheriff in the same situation, but, then, cops are cops.

(53,661 posts)He and his wife were having problems, and while he had time to spare, he hung himself.
In front of their elementary school age children. Who he was supposed to care for while his wife was working.
There is such as thing as a revenge suicide and I think that was one.
But with the history of this country, I will NEVER believe a black person would choose that method of suicide, EVER. It's murder and terrorism until proven otherwise, IMHO.

(55,894 posts)Agent Joe Wooten from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said that Champions body was found with his feet touching the ground, with his knees slightly buckled. He also said that Champion was interviewed twice as part of a murder investigation last week, but was not charged. The victim in that case was identified as Carol Lewis. The cause of her death was not mentioned.

(2,741 posts)From the Atlanta Journal-Constitution:
The GBI said while there appears to be no signs of foul play in the death of a black Greene County man found hanging from a tree Monday morning they are ruling nothing out.
The victim, Roosevelt Champion III, 43, was last seen Sunday evening by family members. He was questioned twice last week by Greensboro police investigating the murder of a local white woman but had not been charged, said GBI Special Agent in Charge Joe Wooten.
Due to current tensions nationwide between law enforcement and the black community, Wooten promised greater transparency with the media. The autopsy has been expedited, he said, with results expected Tuesday morning.
