be the single thing that costs him the election.

It would have been better to 'evolve' on this earlier when it could've been 'accepted' by more people who maybe aren't there yet or to have it have less of an 'impact' on people who might take issue with it.

The presidency and the fate of the house/senate are the democrat's to lose. They have so many instances of the republican's ignoring American's concerns, being completely bought, out of touch, etc failing to rally all those who share the same beliefs (again as in 2008) is purely on the democratic party.

The Republicans are going to jump the shark over today's pronouncements. They are already foaming at the mouth even about women rights to vote. This is going to send them spiraling out of control.

The teabaggers will never shut up about this. It gives President Obama the perfect setup to take the knockout punch.

I sincerely hope that this is what will happen. I can't wait for Axelrod to chime in.

This is going to be a plus for the President... a huge plus.

Before coming to DU today to read the reactions here, I would have said no way.

However, since reading some people here minimizing and downright mocking his statement today, I just don't know. What was confirmed to me today was the fact that there is literally nothing this president could say or do that wouldn't be pissed on by some here. Ugh.

There are a lot of other issues that will be taken under consideration that people will consider far more important, such as the economy, taxes, student loan itnerest, Afghanistan, and immigration. If things go bad with some of these issues, it could become a tipping point/tie-breaker. I don't know who is this office that is supposedly "way smarter than YOU" , but I'm not convinced they're way smarter than anyone.

There are some nutcases here who have been trying to get people to vote against anyone who supports gay marriage (even in the local elections, as if local councillors had any say in the matter!) But, as the leaders of all three of the main parties support gay marriage - one of the very few good things about Cameron - this is not likely to work.

In America, I would guess that most right-wingers are against gay marriage; but right-wingers wouldn't be voting for President Obama in any case.

I'd like to say "no" but this is a risky move, no matter how inevitable marriage equality is in the long run. Elections are not won in the long run. I think it's high time a president did this. It's about ten years sooner than I expected. I'm happy.

But that said, this endorsement of civil equality will put votes at risk in a number of swing states--particularly North Carolina, Ohio, New Mexico, and Colorado. Shit, maybe Michigan too. Like ordering Osama bin Laden killed, this was a big ballsy call on the president's part. It will define his legacy, whether it's a 4-year or 8-year one.

Gonna change my sigline now.
