Hundreds of kittens. Just an update on my quest to get some feral cats fixed. I had a dream the other night that I went looking for the kittens that Mamakitty and Splitface had recently. ( Pictures in this post http://www.democraticunderground.com/116121812) Those are the two tortie cats. I went to the vacant lot behind my house and found, not a few kittens, but hundreds of adorable 3-4 week old kittens.
LOL, I was so overwhelmed with kittens. I was worried that I wouldn't be able to spay/neuter them all. I think on my next day off, I am going to see if I can locate Mamakitty and Splitface's little brood. Maybe if I find them, I can get the process of trapping the adult cats sooner. I can't start trapping until the new babies can eat solid food. I need to know they are safe. Maybe if I find them early enough, they can be adopted out as pets. Any thoughts?

(5,829 posts)I have my own feral herd in my basement. Long story, involves rescues and injured knees, but upshot is that the 5 there won't let me touch them. I'm looking f/ traps so I can at least get 2 males neutered. As it is, I already rescued 1 kit couple years ago. 3 wks ago, 2 more:

Fortunately my herd isn't very fertile...

(75,480 posts)They place them with foster homes at first with volunteers who socialize them. Then they display them in vets offices and pet stores who allow them to do it. Of course, there are adoption protocols that are followed. You might get together some volunteers to help you out. The ones that are too wild often are adopted out as barn cats and the ones that can't be tamed are neutered and returned to the fields. Of course there are volunteers that man feeding stations not only for the cats but feral barn animals like chickens that people dump down by our creek.
Maybe you could start an organization like this in your area. They do work with other animal rescue organizations and the sheriff's animal control division.
