I know that I have never seen this before, and neither have the rest of our local reporters. We have bridges being built across, not just communities of color, but all communities. This is what police brutality is doing...
(And that is the surface issue, since people are realizing this goes well beyond just that)
May 12, 2015 (San Diego) Over 100 people came to the Church of the Brethren on the 11, to talk police brutality and community. They came from a multitude of groups, ranging from the Nation of Islam to comUNIDAD and Union del Barrio.
They came to listen to people speak about their contacts with law enforcement, some lethal. Others came to talk strategy on how to act when the community is under attack.
The first speaker was Shakina Ortega, whos husband Victor, died in 2012 at the hands of San Diego Police Officer Jonathan McCarthy. Doubts have been raised in the official story two years on. She told the crowd that we should be concerned that the police investigate their own. She also said that San Diego needs a major change to the police department.
Her case, sadly is not the only one. Pedro Rios, Director for the American Friends Service Committees US-Mexico Border Program spoke about United States Border Patrol abuses along the border. These abuses are not just limited to migrant workers, but one third, according to Rios, involve United States nationals.

(12,644 posts)Baltimore incident that the thing that the media was not reporting on, and the thing that tv watchers were not seeing is the new organization and leadership being developed in response to the assault by police. The media would have you think that everyone out there were thugs and looters but there were many people starting to organize to do something concrete about the problem. That's the thing nobody sees except those involved. For every action there is a reaction.

(45,274 posts)Things have been afoot for more than 4 years now. What happened in Madison (we share some memories of that time), at Zucatti Park, in Ferguson, in Baltimore, in so many places--none of that stopped happening. The mainstream media, driven by their wishful thinking and their instructions from On High, declared the boat sunk when it disappeared from view. They failed to notice that it was a submarine. It merely submerged, only to pop up again and again, in places and shapes where it was not recognized.

The demonstration in front of the consulate was small, but loud... and of course, racism is involved in this too. IN the case of Mexico, well, let's just say native americans are not seen as truly fully human.
I also got an update on the events from Saturday.

(32,988 posts)They are a small, but good denomination. Traditionally, they are a peace church. They believe in living simply. They do things by example, and do not proselytize. I belonged to that church years ago. My husband was raised in that church.
It is typical of them that they would start this dialogue. I hope it gets all the support and publicity it needs. I hope that the people here who are not believers will be willing to have an open mind about them and work with them.

(2,426 posts)Here in my town I am getting together to support black activists on police issues. Our mayor does not want to go along with a federal judge's ruling to report to the federal govt. on the progress of our police training. Can you believe it? And this is not Birmingham Alabama, it is Portland Oregon!
Get together and make it a fair world.

(32,139 posts)This is how we insist on something better. This is how we end police militarization and corrupt policies that grow impoverished communities; police militarization; exploitative systems of government and prisons; and the targeting of minority groups, the poor, and the marginalized.
This is an important OP, Nadin.
Thank you.
