Reid: NFL Should Care As Much About Redskins 'Racist' Name As Deflategate

Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) said on Tuesday that he wished NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell would act as swiftly to change the “racist” name of the Washington Redskins as he did to suspend Patriots star Tom Brady.

Patriots quarterback Tom Brady was suspended Monday for four games for his alleged role in the scandal. However, Reid said, the name of the Washington Redskins has yet to be changed despite outcries from Native Americans and others who find it offensive.
“Yesterday, the National Football League punished one of it’s most recognizable players for the result of having tampered with game balls,” Reid said. "I find it stunning that the National Football League is more concerned about how much air is in a football than with a racist franchise name that denigrates Native Americans across the country. The Redskins name is a racist name. So, I wish the commissioner would act as swiftly and decisefully (sic) in changing the name of the D.C. team as he did about not enough air in a football."

The Senate's top Democrat renewed his crusade against the Washington Redskins, using time on the Senate floor Tuesday morning to decry the team's name as "racist" and to mock National Football League officials for sanctioning the Super Bowl champion New England Patriots over the use of deflated footballs without addressing the Redskins name.
"The Redskins name is a racist name," Harry Reid (D-Nev.) said, opening his customary morning remarks with football as the chamber takes up closely watched international trade legislation.
Reid has spoken out against the Redskins name for more than a year now, and his latest remarks were prompted by the NFL's decision Monday to suspend Patriots quarterback Tom Brady for four games and fine his team $1 million after an investigation found it probable that the team had illegally deflated footballs during last season's championship run.
