?w=632But their funeral procession came to a halt when a California Highway Patrol officer pulled over one of their escorts, prompting all the other cars to pull over too.
Reporter Erica Nochlin sat down with the family for an interview youll only see on CBS2.
The family says they were outraged when that driver was handed a traffic ticket. That anger can clearly be heard in a female relatives voice during cell phone video taken of the stop: These people just lost their mom you stoppin a whole funeral this is ridiculous man.
Family member Ricky Powers says hes still mad his chance to mourn his aunt, Sandra, was interrupted by the officer: I asked him, I said, You really think this is the time and place for that? I mean, were grieving right now.'
CHP Officer Chris Baldonado says that lead escort was ticketed for stopping traffic in the far right lane of the eastbound 10 when doesnt have that authority.
It is a sad situation, said Baldonado, adding, I think [the officer] acted within his powers, and his best discretion.

This is the same department caught brutally beating a black woman on the Freeway last year

(16,423 posts)Are these people out of their fucking mind? I don't care how much they grieve, a freeway is a place where traffic has to roll unimpeded.

(16,423 posts)It's one thing to hold a procession on a road where traffic is supposed to be slow. It's a totally different thing to hold a procession on road that is purely intended for high-speed traffic.

(23,340 posts)... stopping freeway traffic for half an hour or so is the norm, when a candidate's motorcade rolls through town.
But, I'd be all for a law limiting the size of funeral processions. Ten cars seems more than enough. The rest can find their own way to the cemetery.

(20,491 posts)they completely shut down I-30 westbound for the procession to Weatherford. Completely. I-30. Much more than 100 cars.
On each overpass was a firetruck with 4 firemen in dress uniform.
Didn't see the THAT procession stopped and ticketed. I also didn't hear or read of anyone griping about it either.

(1 post)Way to only report half the story, leaving out important details, and relying on emotion.
The facts are that the escort service, though commonly reported in the media as "uniformed" were not law enforcement officers. It was a private escort service. In the course of performing the escort, they illegally and without authority impeded the flow of traffic on the freeway, directed traffic to stop without the authority to do so, used illegal lighting on the lead motorcycle of the escort, and the driver was operating the vehicle on a suspended license. As a result, the lead escort motorcycle, not the entire funeral procession, was pulled over and cited.
Additionally, the CHP did issue a statement by CHP Spokesperson Sergeant Jose Nunez, stating:
The California Highway Patrol would like to extend condolences to the the family for their loss.
They have no need to, nor should they, apologize for enforcing federal and state traffic laws.
Additionally, shame on every single person who tried to play the race card on this.

I am not sure what your complaint is since the article in the post says "a California Highway Patrol officer pulled over one of their escorts", same as you say.
