Question for Bernie on global economy and trade

I know Bernie is against the TPP, but I have yet to hear that he understands we live in a global economy and there is no changing that. What is his plan for protecting US jobs and dealing with tariff issues that keep the United States competitive?

Although I am skeptical of any trade deal, I do respect both Obama and HRC because they seem to be dealing with this reality. Both have been very clear on the fact that we do live in a world with a global economy, and the only way we can have some control of the future is to impact trade pacts by trying to include enforceable rules to level the playing field.

In the meantime, as far as I can tell, Bernie has no plan for that other than to denounce the TPP. That's not going to change the reality that we are competing in a global economy. Head in the sand is not a solution. What is his plan? Seems like so far he is just playing politics. We elect folks to formulate solutions. Not just to tell us what is wrong. We can figure that out for ourselves.

For the record, though I adore Warren, I would have the same question for her if she was running for President.

If they passed it was with the help of Democrats. So why does the problem still exist? You're just copying and pasting BS. You don't even have a clue what his plan is, do you?

And he hasn't said. Has he?

If he did he would articulate it as Obama and HRC have. You can agree or disagree with the solution, but you have to have more respect for those that have one versus those that just use your watch to tell you what time it is.

What plan has Obama articulated? Last time I checked we weren't privy to the details because the TPP is classified. I don't believe HRC has articulated a plan either - she doesn't like to take a stand one way or another until she sees which way the wind is blowing.

38. But we aren't electing a Senator, are we?
Wed May 13, 2015, 09:35 PM
May 2015

The question of what policies he seeks to implement, what any of the candidates seek to implement, is crucial. Sponsoring legislation shows us his views on certain measures, but doesn't provide a sense of what specific agenda he would advance as president and how he plans to get it through congress. It doesn't look like any of those bills you list actually became law. Someone can have the best intentions in the world, but if he can't implement them, they amount to nothing. Unless of course people don't actually care about what he plans to can accomplish but simply want someone to make public statements that validate their views.

I won't be making any decisions about whom to caucus for until I hear the various candidates' proposals and how they plan to implement them.

I provided up to the minute links and details representative of the Senator's track record on these matters.

Many of his bills, at the top of the list especially, are pending because they're brand new.

I think my reply is substantive.

The OP seems to want a cogent articulated trade action plan from the candidate and will not accept any type of answer.

I don't know that Bernie has prepared such a statement, and neither has Clinton but the OP insists that she has, in a book.

Well, we aren't electing a senator and we aren't electing a book author, either.

I believe the senator's work in the congress tells us quite a bit and I look forward to hearing his plans for fair international trade, I'm sure it will respect the needs of domestic workers more than most past administrations have.

Like you, I want to hear more.

My friend is a delegate to the California Democratic Convention starting this week, in Anaheim. I told him to do what he can to lobby for more than six debates, I believe state conventions can put pressure on the DNC.

Which is a far cry from an agenda that can actually be implemented.

Sanders has been in the Senate for a long time. Is there no legislation that has become law you can point to? Why is he only now proposing those things? Or have similar measures been proposed before but didn't pass into law?

What would you say Sanders greatest legislative achievement is? Is there a piece of legislation that became law, relating to trade or anything else, that he sponsored that you consider particularly important?

83. Re Citizens United, he's sponsored more bills than any one to reform or repeal it. That's important.

This list I provide is chronologically ordered, and only lists items in the trade subdivision.

Research on his voting record, rather than bills he's sponsored, would provide yet another view of his policy stances.

He has a history in the House followed by his Senate career, and he's in Vermont while I'm in California, so I must admit I'm not an authority on his legislation.

Random thoughts, please study each one and let me know what you think. S 2821 is specifically about global trade:

Sanders co-sponsored:

-- The Domestic Partnership Benefits and Obligations Act of 2009, would grant same-sex domestic partners of federal workers the same benefits as federal workers' different-sex spouses. For proponents of equality under law in America this is a step forward, if not a step across the finish line.

-- ENDA, the Employment Non-Discrimination Act of 2009, would make workplace discrimination in hiring and promotions illegal, and would also prohibit discriminatory behavior against gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender members of American labor unions.

-- The JUSTICE Act, is a bill to reform the USA Patriot Act and FISA Amendments Act and restore some constitutional protection against unreasonable search and seizure by the United States Government.

-- S. 2821, a bill that would require new international trade agreements to contain conditions requiring partner countries to guarantee the right to form labor associations and collectively bargain, eliminate forced labor, end child labor, and outlaw employment discrimination.

-- S. 424, the Uniting American Families Act, is a bill which aims to put into closer compliance with the U.S. Constitution by removing discrimination according to the status of permanent couples. According to law, same-sex couples in permanent relationships cannot marry; only different-sex couples can.

I think the above bills demonstrate a broad progressive agenda addressing social and economic values. Were I to look harder, I'd probably find plenty more.

These came from a quick search and this website: http://thatsmycongress.com/senate/senatorBernardSandersVT111.html

May 2015

Most of the bills he's sponsored have not passed. That's the kind of congress we have.

More of the bills that he's co-sponsored, however, have passed.

My search for Hillary passed bills as Senator:

S. 3145 (110th): A bill to designate a portion of United States Route 20A, located in Orchard Park, New York, as the “Timothy J. Russert Highway”.
Sponsor: Sen. Hillary Clinton [D-NY, 2001-2009]
Introduced: Jun 18, 2008
Enacted — Signed by the President: Jul 23, 2008

S. 3613 (109th): A bill to designate the facility of the United States Postal Service located at 2951 New York Highway 43 in Averill Park, New York, as the “Major George Quamo Post Office Building”.
Sponsor: Sen. Hillary Clinton [D-NY, 2001-2009]
Introduced: Jun 29, 2006
Enacted — Signed by the President: Oct 6, 2006

S. 1241 (108th): Kate Mullany National Historic Site Act
Sponsor: Sen. Hillary Clinton [D-NY, 2001-2009]
Introduced: Jun 11, 2003
Enacted — Signed by the President: Dec 3, 2004

For Senator Sanders:

S. 893: Veterans’ Compensation Cost-of-Living Adjustment Act of 2013
Sponsor: Sen. Bernard “Bernie” Sanders [I-VT]
Introduced: May 8, 2013
Enacted — Signed by the President: Nov 21, 2013

S. 885: A bill to designate the facility of the United States Postal Service located at 35 Park Street in Danville, Vermont, as the “Thaddeus Stevens Post Office”.
Sponsor: Sen. Bernard “Bernie” Sanders [I-VT]
Introduced: May 7, 2013
Enacted — Signed by the President: Nov 26, 2014

H.R. 5245 (109th): To designate the facility of the United States Postal Service located at 1 Marble Street in Fair Haven, Vermont, as the “Matthew Lyon Post Office Building”.
Sponsor: Sen. Bernard “Bernie” Sanders [I-VT]
Introduced: Apr 27, 2006
Enacted — Signed by the President: Aug 2, 2006

It seems that three bills get passed, on average, out of whatever number a legislator sponsors.

However, you did respond to the question in the OP, and you are a Sanders supporter. I'm undecided.
For me, views on issues aren't enough. I like my own views, but I would be a terrible president because I don't have the kind of abilities that would enable me to get legislation passed, to advance an agenda. You seem happy enough with a voting record, ideas themselves. I don't see why they make a whole lot--or any--difference if they can't be implemented.
Sanders has been in congress since 1988. That's not much of a record for nearly three decades. That doesn't bode well for his prospects of getting his agenda enacted. That concerns me.

You'll find that most only have 2 or 3 pass, some have 5 or 6.

Hillary and Sanders each have 3, so maybe it's more about the voting record.

I'm more about the passion and the consistency a candidate demonstrates, and of course what are their top goals.

Warren and Sanders both look to level the playing field and they articulate this well and consistently.

As president, we need to look at their voting record, it tells us more than a handful of bills that may have been passed.

We don't have that many candidate to choose from, so far.

and her Wikipedia entries shows more legislative accomplishments than you listed. Two of the laws you showed for Sanders were for naming post offices, which is to say nothing.

What politicians "look to do" means nothing if they can't get it enacted. It's just words. I understand people here see an ability to work across the isle as a detriment. If someone is even seen with a Republican, they hold it against the person. I'm not looking to elect someone who makes me feel good about my views. I don't need them reinforced. I need real policy implemented. I want a competent president who is able to get things done. You seem to care more about words and views than policy.

Contrary to popular wisdom, helping Chinese trade at the expense of our own worker's jobs doesn't help workers there, trade deals only help the rich on both sides of the ocean.

I don't know where you've been, but while both Clintons were greasing the skids to send entire industries overseas and leaving workers here jobless and homeless, Sanders has been fighting these things.

While Hillary was living it up with the multinational energy corporations making way for more privatization of industries in other countries, Bernie was at home fighting for the middle and working class Americans.

Hillary has advocated H1b visas for STEM jobs because we do not have enough qualified people here. And she is correct. I live in Microsoft country. And that is exactly the case. She has also advocated STRONGLY to increase government funding for STEM education so we can hire US workers instead. For years in fact. As has Obama.

Now let's get back to Bernie. What's his plan other than to complain? He does not have one. HRC does.

20. That's correct. Hillary as SOS was all about "statecrafting" to suit global industries, economies:
Wed May 13, 2015, 09:12 PM
May 2015

She supports promoting trade and multinational corporations running the show over sovereign goverments (they are so unreliable).

"Economic Statecraft" = it's how the Secretary of State makes other nations safe for people like the Koch Brothers.

She warns against "state capitalism", says private boards and investors offer more transparency and accountability:

"Now, state-owned or state-supported enterprises... ...often lack the transparency and accountability that come with private boards and investors."

And finally, the resurgence of state capitalism, a challenge at once economic and strategic.
Now, state-owned or state-supported enterprises are not necessarily problematic in all cases.
But they do often lack the transparency and accountability that come with private boards and investors.
And then, diplomatic challenges arise when states abuse their economic advantage to bully their neighbors or box out competitors, like when we see countries cut off gas flows in the middle of winter over a political disagreement.
So, the State Department, working with seven other U.S. Government agencies, launched a comprehensive study on state capitalism.
And in the coming weeks, we should see a final report with detailed recommendations for how we engage on the challenges posed.

Wed May 13, 2015, 09:37 PM
May 2015

Maybe Bernie's plan is to NOT sign trade deals that are predicated on assuring multinationals and wealthy corporations access to cheap slave labor in a race to the bottom.

It isn't even a reasonable question.

It would be like asking:

"What is your strategy for going into Iraq and winning the war?"

"uhm... Not going?"

"No, I'm asking you what is your strategy for winning the war?"

Asking what a persons plan for fostering trade deals is very similar. We need to focus on creating jobs at home, not on enriching those that seek to produce things in countries that have no labor unions, no environmental protections, and few to no product safety laws.

This trade treaty does not protect US jobs at all. It is designed to protect the patents on medications, the copyrights on big media and Hollywood, at the expense of American workers. There is nothing in this treaty to protect the vast majority of American workers and it only encourages a continuing race to to the bottom in terms of worker protections and wages.

All we have are these trade treaty drafts to work off of and the problems have not really been put forth to justify a "fix."

The primary beneficiaries are the pharmaceutical industry and the entertainment industry. Neither of these industries are suffering horrible pain.

So saying merely that "He doesn't have a plan" to Sanders position that we shouldn't sign this is a false choice. i.e. "You either are in favor of these measures or You don't have a plan."

I am still waiting for the justification for this treaty.

And I haven't heard from you what this treaty is actually supposed to accomplish or solve.

Opposing a treaty that does no one any good but the wealthiest and assists in capital flight and a race to the bottom for cheap labor IS a good position.

Now, you say you are against the treaty too, but that you believe that two candidates that are for it actually understand the the reason for being in favor of it?

Does this sound reasonable to you? Am I missing some part of your argument?

He is for American workers and labor and for protecting the environment. He is against trade treaties that harm American workers. What would you require to exist for there to be a "plan?"

Ordinarily being in favor or against a piece of legislation or a policy or a treaty is a definitive position. You seem to be creating a special category that only exists for the candidates of your choice.

The problem is that these trade deals aren't designed with national or labor priorities. They are designed merely to assure large corporations access to the cheapest labor and lowest environmental standards. They don't actually benefit Americans all that much and frequently result in diminished infrastructure and capital flight.

The "what is his plan?" question should be written completely as "What is his plan to help American corporations employ people in other countries at bargain basement prices and nets to catch workers attempting suicide?"

But that would be framing the "what is his plan?" question honestly.

I posted links and listed 132 bills sponsored or cosponsored by Sanders, more actually if you include these:

Watching this all unfold has given me insight into how people could be so disillusioned. If they like someone, they will hear nothing but adulation. Even an inquiry into policy as your OP does is unacceptable because it does not worship their chosen idol. Meanwhile, they demonize the other candidate, project all the ills of society on to her and use fabricated claims to reinforce their contention that she is evil personified. What neither the hero worship or demonization does is contribute to any understanding or engagement with policy.

There is always the new demigod that is anointed. And everyone else automatically becomes evil. Silly. And not based in reality, IMO. I am guessing these folks tend to transform the anointed into a mirror, which reflects whatever they want to see. It's not reality, but that doesn't seem to stop them.

I think if any of them had seen and worked with politicians up close and personal they would be cured of that. There is no perfect candidate. But that's just my opinion. Although I will say I believe it is based on reality and truly being involved in the process over the years.

It is a false question to pose in this context that opposition to plans that benefit primarily the wealthy at the expense of the labor and livelihood of American workers, and the health and welfare of the poor people working in factories of Zhenzhou and other places without protection of any kind, would indicate a "lack of a plan."

Dealing with the reality....is that we are now part of the GHWBush New World Order. Our country's living standards have been lowered to be "more in line" of what is seen throughout the 3rd world countries.

Yeh, Obama and Clinton are surely dealing with the reality that they helped create, and the rest of us are treated with condescension and often contempt.

The party does not want or need those of us who question the authority of the ones who made the decisions on this trade issue.

You have made your feelings toward the rest of us clear, and they are not kind in any way.

Today I think I finally realized fully that it makes no matter whether I vote Democratic or for Republicans. It simply does not matter anymore.

These free trade treaties are the REASON we suffer increasing job loss as they assist and abet the race to the bottom in terms of the costs of labor and large corporations intent to evade reasonable regulation of their activities. I seriously don't understand who your questions seem so utterly vague.

"how will we preserve jobs in a changing global economy?" That kind of question is more worthy of a fluffy television interviewer or a badly scripted debate. There is no complexity to it or understanding of the costs of these treaties.

If you do understand them then by all means express them and enlighten me as to what the TPP is intended to accomplish. I actually am fairly educated and modestly intelligent. I do follow the news and am decently well read in foreign and domestic affairs.

There is not a part of this treaty that provides any protections or assurances to labor, the environment, or domestic regulation outside of the scope of protecting patents for the ubber rich. I hardly think that assuring the patent profits of Pfizer is worth flushing the economic stability of the average American worker further down the drain.

Senator Sanders is against free trade agreements that are damaging to American workers and the environment. Your question seems to be "well what are you for?" What sectors are these job losses in? What industries or professions? I know you are clever enough to do better than this vague, circular argumentation. Tell me what occupations are being protected by this treaty and how. Until I know the scope of the problem I don't see any way to just throw my unwavering support behind a treaty that you have also already stated you do not support.

How is it deflection to ask: "What jobs are being threatened?"

It is central to your argument of job losses. If there are losses or potential losses then we need to know where they are to determine whether any treaty is doing a decent job protecting them.

You are merely repeating a vague question without any context. If I was crafting legislation to protect rivers and streams it would be reasonable to ask what the pollutants and run off sources are. If I was working on a bill to promote green energy on a state level it would be reasonable to question the specific benefits of wind, solar, and hydro and what impacts those might have as well as how much of a resource they are to various parts of the state.

I don't think you are actually reading the entirety of the posts of the people that are questioning you.

95. Progressive Caucus Releases Trade Principles that Put Workers First in Trade Agreements
Wed May 13, 2015, 10:57 PM
May 2015

snip* The text of the executive summary is below and the full version can be viewed here.

Principles for Trade: A Model for Global Progress

America’s current trade policy fails working families while increasing profits for the world’s largest corporations. Trade agreements should create a net increase of good American jobs, spur more balanced trade between partners, and improve governance, public health, and environmental protections around the world. The Congressional Progressive Caucus believes the following principles can ensure fairer trade agreements by prioritizing middle class families and removing special protections and privileges for corporations:

Protect Congress’ Authority to Set Trade Policy
Restore Balanced trade
Put Workers First
Stop Currency Manipulation
Expand Buy America Procurement Practices
Protect the Environment for Future Generations
Prioritize Consumers above Profits
Protect Nationhood Rights
Secure Affordable Access to Essential Medicines and Services
Respect Human Rights
Provide a Safety Net for Vulnerable Workers

Since implementation of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) in 1994, the United States has lost millions of jobs in key sectors like manufacturing, wages have stagnated, and the standard of living for working families has dropped.

Outside of the United States, misguided trade policies are devastating both rural and urban communities in emerging nations, from the displacement of millions of small farmers in Mexico to low wages and terrible conditions for garment factory workers in Honduras. Trade agreements that destroy local livelihoods and provide workers with little economic opportunity create strong incentives for immigration to the United States. U.S. trade policy must focus on creating economic opportunity for working people in the United States and abroad, not only on maximizing short-term profits for large corporations

The United States negotiates some of the world’s largest trade agreements. These deals must put working families and our environment first. The United States must stop using trade agreements as investment deals for the world’s wealthiest corporations and instead prioritize higher wages, safer work and environmental standards, and a healthier world economy.

Does that say just no to ALL trade pacts? NO. Sanders is saying no to the current one which he knows does not protect American workers, workers in other countries, and does not protect the environment.

I don't know what you are reading but clearly I just posted that Sanders wants TRADE POLICIES but they must be fair!

Can you comprehend that? And please don't say all Dems support it and then turn around call it bitching. It's truly insulting....

And if you claim all Dems want that stuff you need to provide a link showing where they are actively working to make sure the TPP does exactly that rather than pull stuff out of thin air.

as well as your later claim (below) that you wish "the debate within the party (be shifted) to the left" with your own words -- the ones where you call Warren a liar and simultaneously denigrate liberals in general:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1002&pid=6560570

MaggieD (1,568 posts)

Liz Warren plays political games too

Just like any politician. She is smart enough to know that ANY trade talks are held close to the vest while being negotiated, yet she apparently wants people to think this is some nefarious action. Meanwhile, liberals, all over the internet pretend that nothing at all is known about the TPP, apparently because that is easier than being informed that there is actually lots of info out about the TPP.

I'm personally opposed to the TPP because I AM informed about the framework of the pact. Not because some politician told me it's secret and therefore nefarious. However, I do take Obama's point that the TPP is going to sail with or without the USA. And I laud him for trying to bend the deal as far in our favor as possible.

I like Warren, but I also realize she is just a politician like every other politician when it comes to playing political games.

http://thedailybanter.com/2015/04/elizabeth-warren-is-not-telling-the-truth-about-the-trans-pacific-partnership-trade-deal/

"The issue of trade is one of the (rare) areas in which I consider myself a moderate Democrat, able to see the merits of both sides of the question, but persuadable in either direction. Like many Democrats, I’ve got a strong sense that in trade deals past, we’ve gotten screwed, and that our leaders have not properly leveraged the value of the American consumer. On the other hand, President Obama makes a compelling case that the trade choo-choo is leaving the station, with us or without us, and so we’re better off having our hand somewhere on the throttle. Either way, I also believe that every leader needs political pressure from the left, because it makes them get us a better deal.

When it comes to Trade Promotion Authority, then, the question really boils down to a matter of trust: do you trust President Obama to get the very best deal possible, and want to give him the flexibility to do that? Just as in the case of the Iran nuclear deal, these are multi-party talks that are very complicated, and nearly impossible to conduct completely in the open.

This is not a new phenomenon, and one which Sen. Warren seems to understand in the context of the P5+1 talks. When she (Warren) is shocked, SHOCKED that the TPP deal isn’t available for public viewing while it is still being negotiated, she is not telling you the truth. She knows that the reason the deal isn’t available while it’s being negotiated is, right or wrong, because public pressure could, at any point, derail a flawed but fixable agreement. The reason she gives, however, is quite literally unbelievable:

Warren: Why? Here’s the real answer people have given me: “We can’t make this deal public because if the American people saw what was in it, they would be opposed to it.” Seriously, Sen. Warren? “People” have given it to you? Way to narrow it down, because I was going to go away convinced you’d been advised by hoot owls, who are notorious liars. Why the secrecy, though? If these “people” are so sure TPP is a horrible deal, why can’t we talk to them? Can other people besides you see them?"

And let's contrast this thread of yours' (the OP here) with an earlier claim of yours' -- your claim that "no one is bashing Bernie Sanders" -- with the following two posts:
