But Clarey (who hasn't actually seen the film yet) describes being mortified when discovering from critics, who hailed Therons performance and the well-rounded nature of her role in the film, that Fury Road was not your average action movie.
Charlize Theron kept showing up a lot in the trailers, while Tom Hardy (Mad Max) seemed to have cameo appearances. Theron sure talked a lot during the trailers while I dont think Ive heard one line from Hardy. And finally, Therons character barked orders to Mad Max. Nobody barks orders to Mad Max, an obviously distressed Clarey wrote.
He claims that he and other men are being duped by explosions, fire tornadoes and desert raiders into seeing what is guaranteed to be nothing more than feminist propaganda, while at the same time being insulted and tricked into viewing a piece of American culture ruined and rewritten right in front of their very eyes.
Upside: now my wife wants us to go see Mad Max.

(233 posts)Yes, an Aussie movie set there, but it is illustrative of what my history prof called "The American Cowboy Myth." Ya know, the one where the strong, quiet, lone gunman avoids conflict as much as possible, even allowing the bad guys to hit him first, before finally giving in and resorting to uber-violence in order to save the defenseless villagers. Also in this worldview, the men are MEN and women are meek, helpless things. How DARE Theron's character boss him around!
Of course Max does it for the gasoline usually, so perhaps he's an anti-hero to some degree....

(9,350 posts)From what I read, many of these men are just insecure. It seems that some of these men just want to be able to tell women what to do. I read one article about them last year and one guy asked the female author of the article if he could tell her to go get him a sandwich. She allowed him to do so and that made him happy.
Other men, I think including the man who asked the sandwich question, complained about not getting joint custody of their children and having to pay child support. Some of them also complained about having to pay alimony. They also pointed out how there is a double standard between men and women having to pay child support and alimony. They pointed out that with the fact that a number of women have become the breadwinners in their families only now are laws changing so that women do not have to pay men alimony. Others, I believe mainly the female MRAs, complained about nurses in hospital nurseries treating female babies more gently than they treated male babies.

Unlike the white rights groups, the men's rights groups seem to fly under the radar and are not nearly as marginalized as racist groups. As a result, they have a very large voice, especially on the internet, and are well-represented at almost every major political discussion site, including this one. Where a white supremacist would be run out of almost any political/social discussion site, men's rights activists (He-Man Women Haters), are tolerated and even given free reign to spout their hatred, as if their "issues" are somehow valid.

(12,041 posts)It is a fun movie, but don't expect much in the way of deep social commentary. While there are some feminist themes and allegories about class conflict these themes are mostly in the background and the focus of the movie is clearly on the chase scenes and explosions.
There is really not much of a story, but the world it takes place in is very interesting. I enjoyed it and I am sure many people will absolutely love it, just go in expecting an action movie rather than a feminist political movie. It is quite pathetic that the MRA groups are freaking out over this because most people probably won't even notice the feminist themes, in fact sad as it may be people are far more likely to notice the scantily clad women than the feminism.

So if you want to see more feminist propaganda marketed as masculine action movie go see Fury Road. If not, at least wait for the first user reviews. A lot of men are going to be angry at being fooled into paying.

(5,739 posts)No one is talking about the rampant violence against women in the film, because they made it well known they hired a feminist consultant (when in reality they hired her, because she had worked with sex slaves in Africa and wanted those actors to portray their part well). They intentionally antagonized a group that was going to see the movie anyways, while giving them cover from the twitter brigade that will attack anything that even has a hint of violence against women (there actually is a shocking amount of this, way more than any major release to date and really perverted things like human milking machines), even when it is portrayed negatively like it is in this film.
It is just standard action film with the standard strong female character, reminded me of T2, I didn't think there was anything really groundbreaking about it. Anyone shocked that Mad Max has strong female characters didn't watch the last two movies. Now it is getting a ton of good press. It is getting haled as a feminist magnum opus, when in reality it just a ultra-violent action movie.
At least that is the cynic in me speaking following actually seeing the movie. I just have a feeling someone in the marketing department is popping champagne right now.
I did like the movie though, this is just all side to me.

(7,895 posts)They're all about what they never had to begin with. They complain loud and long. They carry guns whenever they can. They seem to anyone who knows them to be the most transparent bunch of fools who would be the first to run off any time real men were called for in a real situation: like changing a diaper, or sitting down and listening rather than howling abuse in a disagreement. Accepting responsibility for a mistake rather than attacking the victim of that error.
Real men do this and more without demanding servile behavior from women (and children it should be said). Real men are also not heroes for doing this, they are just being good people. That is something the MRA crowd cannot understand, sadly. They are damaged humans who've been sold one more exceptionalist lie about their place in the food chain.

(2,322 posts)...that there will be several sequels. And you know when a movie makes this kind of a splash, every studio in Hollywood jumps on the bandwagon. (i.e. if Hollywood thinks feminist propaganda--as these idiots see it--helped make all this $$ then there will be more and more such in action films). And it's getting accolades from everyone in the action-film-comic-book world that these idiots think is theirs (including serious artists). Fandom is swooning over this film; their praise is rapturous not only for it's style and energy but for Theron. So we're going to see more of it in those genres as well. Comic book companies will also jump on that bandwagon.
It's going to be the end of the world for the "men's rights" groups who are sure their exclusive man caves (action films and comic books and games) are being invaded by uppity wimmen.
As for the unvarnished reality of the film (i.e. not blinded by explosions or male insecurities)...my husband saw it and his opinion is that's it's artfully, visually splendid and quite a spectacle, but also absurd (meaning, you can't bring logic to it or you'll be sitting through the whole movie saying, "Huh? Why?" But then most viewers will likely check their logic at the door, so win-win).
Guess now it'll make even more money as this complaint will, as said, have women wanting to see it.

Theron does stand out because her character and motives are so much more complex than Max's. And it's a big screen novelty to have a major female character that isn't just all about cleavage and false eyelashes.
