Not what we might want personally - just what we think will be the jury's sentence.

(51,308 posts)My friends seem to think so too.
Seems unlikely for a death penalty vote in Mass. But, who knows?
Life without parole is my preference as well.

(14,449 posts)Influence from his brother. If not for those I think they would vote death penalty.

(51,308 posts)The parents of that little 8 year old asked that the death penalty be taken off the table.
I hope the jury comes through and we can just put a period on this whole horrid saga.

(14,449 posts)Of course that will not be a picnic either.

(51,308 posts)And as much as I hate to admit that I feel this way; it will make me grimly satisfied to see them cuff him and take him away forever.

(10,952 posts)get life without parole. It only takes one juror to vote against the death penalty to deep six that option.
I wonder if they'll return a sentence today.

(18,115 posts)I think Sister Prejean was his life saver. It was her testimony, in my opinion, that will make the difference. I hope so anyway. I think she gave the jurors enough.
The judge made some bad rulings yesterday though.

(51,308 posts)Only kept up with the case kind of in and out during my days.
I did hear that Sister Prejean was there. That surprised me, though I don't know why.
I don't care for Tsarnaev one whit. I really don't care what sentence comes back, but I prefer the life in prison sentence. I think that is what the jury will choose.
Wonder if we'll know tomorrow?

(18,115 posts)if they did not return a unanimous sentence of death that he would automatically get life in prison. He told them only that to sentence to death it had to be unanimous. Since there is no other question for them at this point they are given the impression that if they don't all agree, the result is a hung jury rather than automatic life.
Sister Prejean was a bit of a rabbit in the hat or ace in the hole. Her visits were discrete.

(51,308 posts)I hate it when judges are not clear.
I served on a jury with that same issue.

(72,790 posts)is what I am hoping for.
I'm thinking a better poll would have been to ask what DUers WANTED to see happen!

(72,790 posts)It's just a DU poll after all.
Very true.

(7,820 posts)I think it is likely to be the death penalty, though. This jury was death penalty qualified beforehand, meaning they had to say they would be willing to impose a death sentence if the law called for it. Those who said they opposed the death sentence in all cases were not eligible. Which means you would need for a jury who feels there are cases where it's appropriate to find it not justified in this case.

(23,339 posts)This should not be an outcome of any crime.

(28,749 posts)Even with a "death qualified" jury I don't see us giving the death penalty.

(51,308 posts)Now, if this jury was in Texas - they'd probably have been out an hour and back with death.

(30,884 posts)While there are plenty of Bay Staters who are fine with the death penalty the odds are long that this entire jury would agree to it.

(51,308 posts)that I'm very surprised.

(30,884 posts)of life without parole may have swayed some jurors. Will be interesting to hear what the jurors say.

(28,552 posts).... without parole.
I don't really care what they do with the guy so long as he is never a free man again.

(6,960 posts)For this guys sake, however, I hope they sentence him to death.
Frankly, at his age, a life sentence is much crueler punishment than death.
I'm for justice and punishment for what he did, but a life sentence is torture.

(63,909 posts)Of course, I don't know. I just think she did. She can make the moral case against the death penalty...

(51,308 posts)As others have said, I just cannot imagine a death sentence coming from a Massachusetts jury.
I'm an opponent of the DP anyway; amazing we're the only western nation still using it.
