Nebraska officials Thursday afternoon confirmed another outbreak of bird flu and said an additional 1.8 million chickens in Dixon County will be destroyed.

This detection of avian influenza subtype H5N2 comes two days after the Nebraska Department of Agriculture announced the discovery of the state’s first confirmed case.

The agency does not divulge names of producers affected by such outbreaks, but Dixon County is home to a large production facility operated by Michael Foods Egg Products Co. That plant is in Wakefield, about midway between Norfolk, Nebraska, and Sioux City, Iowa.

The first case affected 1.7 million chickens. Combined with the destruction of the second flock, bird flu has now affected almost 40 percent of the state’s more than 9.4 million egg-laying hens.
