Palin unsurprisingly declining to run for president this time accelerated a process of implosion, backbiting and mass banning that had already been underway for a while. They are just now figuring out that mass banning and intolerance of dissent on a site that relies on individual donations and not advertising is not a formula for success, but I think the horse is already out of the barn and the site is irretrievably harmed and on its way out.
The shitshow that was this year's GOP candidate slate, and the cherry on top of Mitt being the nominee, may simply be the last straw.
For the last year or so JimRob has allowed a handful of harpies to hound and cause the banning of any poster felt to be dissenting on whatever passed as the party line for the moment (support of Palin then Gingrich, hatred of Romney, etc.) and I think even he realizes now that he let it go too far too long because the numbers of posters and donors are just way down and probably never going to come back up.
There was a recent freepathon thread or two where mass open dissent over the amounts of money being demanded, without any accountability of how a crap site like FR would need such expenditures, was pretty much a critical moment for the site.
