(13,986 posts)I don't get pissed about posts about troglodyte white males: I am not a troglodyte. Nor do I get pissed about posts about homophobic Christians: I am not a homophobe.
So non-racists should not feel offended. If one says, perhaps, "I hate the number 3," well, should 2 be offended, just because it also can be part of the number 5?

(37,748 posts)I like to pretend I'm clever enough to tell other people what they shouldn't feel offended by too. In my case, it's all pretense and projection. No doubt though, you'll justify your reason as something completely righteous...

(12,730 posts)another question that needs answering is, why aren't ALL southerners racists?

(13,986 posts)In spite of my upbringing. Some of us don't accept what teachers and grownups tell us at face value.
Questioning is the key to thought.

(20,384 posts)History books taught in schools have been notoriously anglo-centric. The Native history alone was pure BS from my recollection of what I was taught in school.

(82,383 posts)textbooks from the North used in the 50s didn't have things that would be unacceptable today. They wouldn't have gone on about the Civil War and Lincoln that way, but they might have instructed that blacks were inferior and subject to separate laws.

(18,497 posts)I have lived within an hour or so of Savannah ever since then.
I find the racism in Ohio, when I visit, to be way more pronounced and vile there.
Granted, this is a coastal area and they are typically much more progressive than other areas in the south.
I lived inland (that hour mentioned) in a couple of different cities and I fully agree that things were nearly intolerable there.
I live over the river and through the woods from Savannah in the coastal low country of SC. But again. If you go inland? Stick to the big cities.

(3,247 posts)As a white Virginian, more than half of whose immediate family members are black, I'd ask you to take a look at this:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/wonkblog/wp/2015/04/28/the-most-racist-places-in-america-according-to-google/
which indicates, as I long suspected based on personal observation, that the regions north, south, and west of us are far more inclined to use the n-word than we are here in VA. MAYBE that just means we're more polite. But I've LIVED albeit briefly in Michigan, Ohio, Alabama, and Louisiana, and my observations support the finding that overt racism is far more socially acceptable in the Rust Belt and the Deep South than here in the border states.
If any of my biracial nieces were to ask my advice about where might be safe or unsafe places to relocate, my advice would have nothing to do with north vs. south and everything to do with STAY AWAY FROM THE RUST BELT AND THE DEEP SOUTH. Fortunately they are safe in Maryland and Montana where simplistic hatemongering re north vs. south is FUCKING irrelevant.
