1. "Who is Judd?" is not the story. "Why did 72K West Virginians vote for him?" is the story.

3. 72K is a pretty small percentage of registered voters - but still a lot of people

In a State where Obama is not popular among Democrats to begin with - it doesn't suprise me that many of those who would grudgingly agree to vote for him might not bother showing up to support him in a primary where there was no serious opposition. So those who REALY don't like him were probably the only ones highly motivated to vote. Still, it's unsettling.

4. OK, here's a thought. Many racists in WV are Republicans, right?

And these Republicans are just so excited about Rmoney, Santorum, etc. that they vote for Judd.

Is WV an open primary state? If not, my conjecture is out the window.

You vote your party registration.

But....

WV politics dictates you register Democrat no matter what if you want to have a voice in State and local elections. Our party is so strong in local races the R's don't even bother running anyone in 50% of the races. The other 50% are R's that just run to have something to do.

that 40% are Republicans that registered democrat...

8. How is turnout in the primaries? Since Obama is running unopposed I would think turnout would be low

I voted in our local Dem primary and it was just a vote for Obama. No other candidates on the ballot, and no other races or referendums on the ballot. It was literally push the Obama button and done. Hardly worth the trouble, really. There was a line on the GOOP side, but the poll workers were surprised when I asked for a Dem ballot, and said they had seen only a handfull of Dems all day.

The real story here is how did this MulletHead get himself on the ballot? Or did he have a write-in campaign or something?
