(14,255 posts)I will drop him a line, anyway.
I have decided to not vote for or support any more DINOs. And I get to decide who is a DINO.
For the rest of them, I will just save the list in case they run for president or ask me for money.
This "lesser evil" bullshit just gets us evil, anyway.

Doesn't mean it'll pass, but it's apparently a trade that big business wants (ie. Boeing) in exchange for something else big business wants (TPP).

He'll have fun in his reelecion campaign. I don't think the Republican's will run as crappy of a candidate against him as they did with Merkley.

(7,393 posts)I think Microsoft is tired of having their software pirated by Asian countries. I can understand that. Microsoft is a huge part of the economy here. Regulations that would prohibit pirating in Asian markets will actually protect jobs in my community.

(3,747 posts)Microsoft is a big part of the economy, but they have screwed Washington every chance they get for even more profit. They are a horrible company, and will happily use this to hurt the local economy even more than they already do.

(7,393 posts)Microsoft's main business is the IP of the software they write, which provides a shit ton of good paying jobs here. IP theft in Asian markets means pirates STEAL that software, make copies, and sell them for their own enrichment.
Do you think Microsoft is a charity? Or might they need to be paid for their work in order to employ 100K thousand people, and give them excellent pay and benefits?
It ain't rocket science.

(3,747 posts)Last quarter. Do tell me how they can't afford to pay workers--who, I might add, are treated like total crap.

And of course, that's also ignoring their constant drive to outsource their labor, made even easier under the TPP.
Microsoft doesn't give two shits about the local community. They make profit of our backs. They are among the worst of the tech giants. I'm not interested in giving them more ways to hurt me and the local area.

(7,393 posts)So is stealing from them (and subsequently their workers) okay if they make over a certain amount?
As for your comments about the company, I live here. My wife used to work for them before she retired. We have many, many friends that work for them. Our schools are awesome because of them. And I should know because my son went to those schools. They are better than many private schools and funded by property taxes of the employees that are well paid. We have a diverse community because of Microsoft.
Our unemployment rate is low and our home prices held much of their value and rebounded afterwards because of Microsoft.
Microsoft stood with us in the GLBT community to help anti-discrimination laws, DPP laws, and finally marriage. And not just with their voice, but with their political advocacy donations. Microsoft was one of the first companies to provide free health insurance and life insurance to the domestic partners of its GLBT employees (at least 15 years ago, because that is when I had them).
Microsoft gives their employees PAID time off to work for non-profit organizations in the community -- whichever non-profit the employee chooses (which inspired me and other business owners to do the same, by the way).
Microsoft sent FREE help via their technology geniuses to fix healthcare.gov when the exchange was not functioning right. And they fixed it!
You may hate them. But the people of WA do not. Sorry.

It's about a LOT more than that.

(36,382 posts)There was a recent case here where a US company took an Australian ISP to court to demand a list of people who'd downloaded 'Dallas Buyers Club'. Apparently they've been sending letters threatening legal action to Americans who downloaded it and settling out of court for thousands of dollars. These aren't people who downloaded it for commercial gain, they're just yr average person who downloads a movie and watches it. The company can't do that here. They can send whatever threatening letter they want and the recipient can pretty much ignore them. That's because the courts here aren't going to allow that company to demand exorbitant amounts of money and harass people with frivolous court cases.
Instead of having that IP stuff in the TPP (which Australia and Japan and some other countries are opposed to) the only fast tracking that's worth anything is US companies fast tracking movies and shows like Game of Thrones so we're not having to wait months to see what's already been shown in the US. There's another thread in GD about Game of Thrones and I haven't watched the episode they're talking about because even though I had HBO, a few weeks ago HBO geo-blocked everyone from Australia who had an account with them, even though we'd made the effort to get US credit cards and use generic email accounts that didn't have a .au at the end. We'd been doing the right thing and paid to watch it, but now we've been forced to illegally download it if we want to watch it.
So the IP part is just one of quite a few stinky things about the TPP, which is why the Left over here is overwhelmingly opposed to it...
btw, I was very moved by yr post extolling the virtues of Microsoft. So much so that I'm going to apply for US citizenship and vote for Microsoft in the Primaries. They shit all over Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders when it comes to being caring and sharing!

(12,958 posts)Cantwell spearheaded the trillion dollar lawsuit against big tobacco when she was Atty General here. She she protected medical marijuana patients and state employees when the feds threatened them when she was governor. Now she throws minorities and the middle class under the bus.

(3,041 posts)They're getting a bit too comfy there. Their bread is buttered on the west side of the state, specifically King County, and I'd be willing to bet that I'm not the only native Seattleite with raised eyebrows right now. I'd welcome some new competition for them both. I care about the welfare of the entire nation, not just my locality -- not that I really believe the TPP will help Washington State either.
