(3,732 posts)waiting to get through the SSI/SSDI application process. It wouldn't surprise me if the stress involved in having to fall back on the welfare-isn't-there non-system is enough to exacerbate medical conditions and send people to early graves. I really want to see the hard statistics on this as well as some models for how many people could be diverted from permanent disanility with more humane treatment: for instance a temporary disability program that emphasized stability of life situation so people could focus on taking care of their health issue.
