It will be hard for a Democratic president to get things done with a Republican Congress but at least he or she can use the veto or threat of one to prevent bad things from happening. A Democratic president can at least stymie the Republican party's war on the poor.

I needed to go food shopping so I take the 164 from my apartment in Warner Center to the Vons on Tampa and Victory... I don't own a car so I have to rely on public transportation. My girlfriend works downtown and it's a twenty five mile commute. Even if we owned a car driving that distance with the traffic wouldn't be feasible. She takes the Orange Line and the Red Line and her commute is approximately one and one half hour each way. You get to meet a lot of interesting folks on the bus and subway. In the three or so years I have seen a fist fight, a near gun fight, and a near race riot on the bus and subway but other that that it's been fun. I like people.
Any way after I did my food shopping I walked back to the bus stop and waited for the bus... But I had to go to the restroom so I walked to the Carls Jr near the bus stop. When I went in I saw a Latino gentleman , likely in his forties, helping his mom, likely in her seventies, who is in a wheel chair use the restroom. I went out to give them their privacy...I can relate because I was a caregiver to my mom who was in a wheelchair for twelve years and finding a restroom is a problem...Do you take her into the men's restroom, the woman's restroom, where, and how much privacy can you give her. I usually tried to find someone to make sure the restroom was empty and to keep people out...
I could tell that man and his mom don't have much...
A Republican president and a compliant Republican Congress can dismantle the safety net that folks like these rely on...They already have plans to turn vital programs like Medicaid and Food Stamps into block grant programs. This would leave our most vulnerable citizens at the tender mercies of their state governments, the majority of which are controlled by Republicans.
As Jesus said "the poor you will always have with you..." For me this election isn't about such ethereal notions as the !%, corporatists, and Third Wayers but about the man and his disabled mom whom I saw in the restroom at Carl's Jr. and people like them
I will do whatever God allows me to do to protect their interests.

(99,710 posts)Why don't you come to Los Angeles and we will take the Orange Line... We will stop in Van Nuys... It's a working class city... We will tell them they shouldn't be concerned about mundane things like their Medi-Cal, SSDI, and Snap Program...Then we will take the Red Line and stop at the Westlake / MacArthur Station and share with them the same message... When we get downtown we can take the Gold Line to the Compton Station and tell them the same thing...Then we'll head back to downtown and take the 68 bus to Boyle Heights and Montebello to tell folks they should be more concerned about the 1% than their Medi Cal which ensures their kids get their teeth fixed...
Latinos, Asians, and African americans make up 35% of our party's base... They likely represent less than 5% of the poster here... Do you ever ask yourself why?
Fifteen percent of Americans live below the poverty line. Do you believe fifteen percent of DU posters live below the poverty line and if not why?
Maybe they are more concerned about the here and now and not pie in the sky.
I will make an assumption and please tell me if I am wrong; you have a car, you have a home, you don't rely on public assistance, you have savings, and you do have a car.
Thank you in advance.
P.S.- I forgot. We will get off at the 103rd Street/Watts Towers Blue Line stop and tell the folks who live their Barack Obama and Maxine Waters are screwing them. I just want to make sure there's a safe distance between the two of us.

(36,392 posts)We have to live with TPP and corporate giveaway to get SNAP. Bullshit. Medical would not be necessary if the nation had uhc like the rest of the world. If our sold out politicians, including the president, stopped sending our jobs away, and raised the minimum wage to a useful level, the need for snap would decrease. I own a car. Sue me. And physically threatening me for calling the president a corporatist and tool of the machine is probably unhelpful, though it was probably inevitable given the devolution of the party lately.

Our party is approximately 35% people of color while DU is approximately 5% people of color. What's up with that? When Skinner did a DU survey it suggested DU was whiter, more educated, more affluent, older, and more female than the party. Maybe that's why you can not understand their concerns and their support for certain candidates.
We all favor a liveable wage, we all favor true health care for all, we all favor a sane foreign policy but creating the conditions for a complete Republican takeover of the legislative, executive, and judicial branch will not bring us any closer to that goal. The Republicans want not to take us back to the twentieth century but want to take us back to the nineteenth century. I will oppose that to my last breath.
P.S. Do you think if I asked the Latino gentleman and his wheel chair bound mom what is more important; SNAP or TPP he would say TPP?
