Student loses again on bid to wear eagle feather in cap during graduation ceremony

A Tulsa federal judge has rejected a high school senior’s request to wear an eagle feather during her high school graduation this evening.

Chief U.S. District Judge Gregory Frizzell accepted a magistrate’s recommendation to deny Hayden Griffith’s request for a preliminary injunction that would allow her to wear a sacred eagle feather during her Caney Valley High School graduation.

Frizzell, in his written ruling, said since Griffith failed to demonstrate a violation of the Oklahoma Religious Freedom Act or her rights to free speech or the free exercise of religion, she subsequently failed to “carry her burden of showing she will suffer irreparable harm if an injunction is not issued, or that the threatened injury would outweigh the harm an injunction may cause.”

An attorney for Griffith with the American Civil Liberties Union in Oklahoma said they were disappointed with the ruling.

I don't really see what the big deal is if she wants to wear the feather. Plenty of people will be wearing crosses and such.

as long as they have proper permits, or if they acquired them before eagles were federally protected. http://www.fws.gov/eaglerepository/factsheets/PossessionOfEagleFeathersFactSheet.pdf

As in, clipped to her hair and sticking out from under the cap.

The rule being protested is "nothing allowed to be on the top or hang from the top of the cap". (As I understand the issue.)

graduating from college with a masters. Because that's what you'll need to compete in this ridiculous world So by allowing someone to wear a feather, then doesn't that open the door for others to wear flowers or god knows what around their neck or on their head? Sometimes you just have to go with the flow. That's life.

I have been to numerous graduations where students build entire scenes on top of their mortarboards. Dinosaurs, Barbie, cocktails, etc.

I honestly don't get why they are making such a BFD about a sacred feather.
