As of this afternoon... I'm at a 1.
Now don't get me wrong...
I'm thrilled as hell to support Bernie...
And remember, MOST Democrats voted AGAINST the TPP... But...
The way the horse-trading/vote whipping goes...
Is that after the backroom deals are forged, then the REAL negotiating begins.
This will really hurt me in my state...
I'm not running, I'm retiring...
If you could get that Dam project approved...
I'm in trouble in 2016... could you come campaign with me, or...
I'm in trouble in 2016... could you stay the hell away from my state ?

I'm going as far back as Carter there.
I was so hopeful that Obama was going to be the first, but that didnt work out.
Lets hope we can get either Sanders or Warren elected, they are the only two that I believe would honestly try and promote the issues they campaign on.
Hillary is playing it too coy, under-promising so we cant hold her accountable.

They get discouraged, they think... what's the use...
And in the past, I could give them the "pep talk"...

I think the TPA passed the Senate 62-something because of some Export/Import Bank dealie Cantwell finagled. Need to verify that. So now, on to the House, where Pelosi has said she wants something to pass, but is expressing the obligatory reservations.

(11,441 posts)The bill, the first to grant a president trade promotion authority since 2002, still must weather a bunch of amendment votes on Friday, but Senate passage is now likely before the Memorial Day weekend, Senate leaders said. That would set up a difficult showdown early next month in the House, where Mr. Obama will have to work to persuade Democrats to back him.
....

....
The 62-38 vote, two more than the 60 needed, came from a solid phalanx of Republicans and more than a dozen Democrats. But the decisive thumbs-up came literally, and long past the allotted time from Democratic Sen. Maria Cantwell of Washington after she and a few others seized the moment as leverage to demand a vote next month on legislation to renew the Export-Import Bank.
....
Democratic support is weak, given the opposition of organized labor. But Rep. Nancy Pelosi of California, the party's leader, has yet to announce her position and has said repeatedly she hopes to be able to facilitate the bill's passage.

(11,833 posts)of the party. Always have, always will. I don't mind that. I learn a lot from them. I agree with them on most issues. Some of the negativity here, it's like 'I didn't get what I want so the democratic party sucks.' I don't agree with that. Democrats achieve a lot of victories. We'll continue having victories.
It doesn't bother me too much. When it does I step away from the keyboard. I can understand why they aren't happy about it. Whether they say 1 or 3 or -4 or whatever, regarding what happened today. I personally would like to see a stronger coalition of left-leaning democrats. If that develops it will develop outside of computers & message boards. I can't see how it would develop by people turning their backs on the democratic party. Turning their backs on candidates or incumbents that they don't like, I can see that as a viable option.
I do wish people would vote in congressional elections and in every state and local election. And vote for liberal candidates. We won't win every battle. This particular one, many here feel that's it's a major loss. So I can understand they are pissed off. Whether they will translate any of it into a meaningful coalition in Congress or outside of it remains to be seen. I do feel our country would benefit by moving further left. Particularly in raising taxes on the rich, spending less on the military, and in investing in our education and infrastructure here at home.
Andy823
(11,555 posts)I have no problem with people being angry, or with them speaking out, but some here take that to an extreme, and do so on a daily basis, day in and day out, it it really gets old listening to how much the dislike, or hate what the party is doing, how terrible all the democrats who disagree with them are, and then come on the boards and stir up shit to get their message out about how they are pissed off at the party, or the candidates they don't support. Doom and gloom is not the way to unite the party and get things done. The main goal should be to make damn sure we don't get more republicans elected, from the WH on down, but especially the WH in 2016. I don't see all the negativity from some on this board as helping to reach that goal.

I like Bernie but honestly don't think he can win. Not a fan of Hillary, but no matter who wins the nomination I "WILL" be supporting them. The 2016 election is going to be a very important one for this country, and there is now way this country can afford another republican in the WH! The bottom line is that any of our candidates will be a million times better than ANY republican.

Make no mistake this trade deal benefits the 1% and the multinationals at the expense of American workers--just like all the others before it. That's why the republicans love it. And a Democratic president is championing it against the better judgment of most of his party.
