FCC takes calls to pull Fox's broadcast licenses 'very seriously'

FCC takes calls to pull Fox's broadcast licenses 'very seriously'
By Brendan Sasso - 05/09/12 05:25 PM ET

Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Julius Genachowski testified Wednesday that his agency takes calls to cancel Fox's broadcast licenses "very seriously."

Groups, including Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW), have urged the FCC to pull Fox's licenses because of evidence that its parent company News Corp. hacked people's phones in the United Kingdom to get stories.

During a Senate Appropriations subcommittee hearing on Wednesday, Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.) pressed Genachowski on whether he plans to do anything about the allegations.

Genachowski said it wouldn't be appropriate to comment on a specific case, but that the commission is "certainly aware of the serious issues that have been raised in the U.K."

He noted that the law requires that the FCC only grant broadcast licenses to people of "good character."

Frank Lautenberg - I know he is getting on in years and has had serious health issues - but I love having him as one of my Senators. And a genuinely kind and warm person too boot - if you meet him out and about.

Trying to squash the "truth" just as the elections are heating up. Where will the Faux viewers get their hate from? How will they know what to say when confronted by liberals with facts? The sky is falling, The sky is falling.

We need a chicken little in the smiles category running around in circles.

News Corp is literally a danger to any country it touches - thanks to them we have the Tea Party, the worst Congress in United States history, and they gave us 8 years of W - who completely destroyed our economy and two countries in pursuit of the Almighty profit. Fuck Murdoch.

which ws involved in some sort of bribery scandal. Instead of giving up their flagship WOR Ch. 9 in NYC, they got the FCC to let them sell it to a group that would move it to NJ, because northern NJ had no English-language commercial station. That is today's WWOR, which is now owned by -- News Corp.!

I doubt anything will happen to Murdoch. I don't even think any hearings in the US have been called for any News Corp. leaders to answer to.

I wouldn't read too much -- or, for that matter, anything -- into Genachowski's statement. I can't think of a single occasion in more than 30 years in which an issue as to which a member of Congress has expressed an interest has been characterized by the FCC as anything other than something that the agency "takes seriously." They are empty words.

Sorry to be a wet blanket, but reality is what reality is.
