Now, ABC News is reporting that another classmate of Romneys is accusing him of lying.

One fellow classmate of Romney's at Cranbrook says he believes Romney is lying when he says he doesn't remember the Lauber incident.

That looks pretty bad, right? But you know what, whoever this classmate is, hed never have gotten to say that if Romney had NEVER RESPONDED IN THE FIRST PLACE.
Here at Mediaite headquarters, we all assumed this story would pretty much just go away. Like I said in my post this morning, this is the story of something Romney allegedly did 50 years ago. Youthful indiscretions dont ruin a campaign. Hell, if you dont believe me, please have a conversation with Dubyas liver or Barrys nostril. Youd think that Romney could just call this story silly and politically motivated and the whole thing would be relegated to late night monologue jokes within a week.
But thats not what hes doing. First he apologizes for something he says he cant remember and now his camp is doing this:

ABC News has learned that the Romney camp is reaching out to several of Romney's old HS friends to ask them to offer "supporting remarks"

Phillip Maxwell, an attorney in Michigan, confirmed to CBS News that the incident with John Lauber is accurately described in The Washington Post piece. Maxwell was one of the Post's four on-the-record sources. A fifth asked not to be named. Maxwell says the only thing not accurate is that the Post reporter said the incident occurred in a dorm room, but it happened in a common room.
"Mitt was a prankster, there's no doubt about it.
This thing with Lauber wasn't a prank. This was, well, as a lawyer, it was an assault. It was an assault and a battery. And I'm sure that John Lauber carried it with him for the rest of his life," Maxwell told CBS News. [...] "I've carried this story with me a long time. It was very disturbing. I think that view is shared by everyone involved in it," Maxwell says. "It just was a black mark on my character that I didn't stop it.
