It's very true that it used to be vastly cheaper because our public universities were vastly better funded, but even with relatively cheap secondary education, most kids didn't really go beyond high school.
I do believe secondary ed should be completely affordable. But so long as it's not, I wish kids and their parents would get more realistic about the costs and the debt involved.

(19,460 posts)2. My college tuition was not cheap in 1968.
I had to work 3 jobs to pay for it and it took me 6 years to get a 4 year degree.
