think
(11,641 posts)It is very close to passing the Senate completely.
Should the TPA; Fast track authority; pass and become law all trade treaties for 6 years would only require 51 Senate votes to pass the TPP or any new treaties over the next 6 years.
31 Democratic Senators voted against fast track authority
13 Democratic Senators voted for fast track authority
49 Republican Senators voted yes
5 Republican Senators voted no.
The 2 independents voted NO

Currently the House the overwhelming majority of Democrats are opposed to the TPA, Fast track authority.
So just like Bill Clinton with NAFTA you have have Obama joining the majority of the Republicans & Multinational Corporations and in direct opposition to the majority of members of his own party to get fast track authority an the TPP made law.
Personally I stand with those Democratic Senators and Congresspersons who oppose the president, the GOP, & the multinational corporations that are trying to ram this classified bill that even our congress people have extremely limited access to.
Lot's of details and information regarding the TPP, NAFTA, CAFTA, free trade, unions, union activists being murdered in trade partner countries, sweat shops, child labor, slave labor, corporate courts, environmental concerns, etc have been discussed.
If you have particular interests or concerns please feel free to ask and I'll provide some links. To be clear I am against fast track authority, against the secrecy and classified nature of the TPP, and would like to see the damn treaty discussed by our elected representatives in public.
Union labor & labor rights groups here in the US and in the countries of our trading partners deserve to be represented in the discussions. Environmental groups and international aid groups should also have a seat at the table IMO.
Cheers.
Hope you have a nice weekend.

(16,372 posts)Even Thom Hartmann thinks the final vote has been held. Even so, the cloture vote is most likely pretty darn close to the final tally.
