Who would have thought that such a religious country would be so far ahead of the US?

(101,262 posts)"Everyone seems to be predicting a 'yes' ... and that seems to be the case at the moment. It's disappointing," said John Murray from Catholic think tank the Iona Institute, which spearheaded the "No" campaign.
...
"I think it's won," Equality Minister Aodhan O'Riordain told Reuters at the main count centre in Dublin, the first of several ministers to predict the vote would pass. "This has really touched a nerve in Ireland today and I'm so proud to be Irish."
...
All Ireland's main political parties, including the conservatives, supported amending the constitutional definition of marriage.

(4,613 posts)that the citizens of Sodom and Gomorrah were punished because of their inhospitality, correct? It had nothing to do with what the fundies have tried to turn it into.

Oh, and Jesus does not say ANYTHING about homosexuality. It's not even in the 10 Commandments.

Paul wrote that missive and many others but he wasn't Jesus although he had an important view of himself.
As far as that list, lotta people gonna be kept out.

(50,566 posts)Really?
And we know this god exists and makes decisions regarding homo sapiens living on one particular planet in one particular galaxy ... how?
How about, some humans are born gay due to natural, not supernatural, factors, and some are born heterosexual due to natural factors. No need to bring in unsubstantiated speculation about supernatural forces that are quite unlikely to exist.

(133 posts)Thanks to my grandfather's birth in Ireland, I have dual citizenship. I go to visit my family and friends as often as I can. One thing that I have noticed is how much attention the Irish people pay to politics, even American. I am always amazed by random conversations that I have with people in pubs or shops about American politics. They could put most American's to shame with their knowledge of American issues and politicians. Overall, they tend to be liberal. Even though most are still Catholic they realize how they have been screwed repeatedly by the church so they don't follow blindly. I am so proud of my country today!

frazzled
(18,402 posts)Civil rights are not something that people should get to decide on. (They could just as well later decide they don't like it so much.) One group of people shouldn't get to "decide" whether another group should have equal rights.
Rights are something that a nation confirms on its citizens: either universally or not at all. I'm not sure what the Irish Constitution consists of, but I will be happier when the US Supreme Court rules that constitutional rights are to be confirmed for everyone, straight or gay. Then it will be a principle ensconced in the nation's laws in perpetuity--a PRINCIPLE, not a decision conferred by one group onto another. That's not what rights are about.
I hope I'm being clear.
muriel_volestrangler
(101,262 posts)To that this will add a new subsection 4:
"Marriage may be contracted in accordance with law by two persons without distinction as to their sex."
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thirty-fourth_Amendment_of_the_Constitution_%28Marriage_Equality%29_Bill_2015
frazzled
(18,402 posts)That subsection should not have to be added. The statement " The State recognises the Family as the natural primary and fundamental unit group of Society, and as a moral institution possessing inalienable and imprescriptible rights, antecedent and superior to all positive law" should be adjudged to apply to everyone by interpretation, not by the whim of the people to deign to "include" some citizens.
Rights are not a public decision, they are universal.
muriel_volestrangler
(101,262 posts)as in the United States. The whim of 9 political appointees is not necessarily any better than the whim of the people.
frazzled
(18,402 posts)And what if "the people" decide that gay people (or people of mixed race) shouldn't marry (as they have often done in the past)? Are you okay with that? It has to work both ways.
muriel_volestrangler
(101,262 posts)You say "should be adjudged to apply to everyone by interpretation", but that depends on the judges doing the interpretation.
