If you want to get married, two adults simply sign a contract and file it at a probate office.

I've always been told the whole issue was rooted in racism and bigotry, with the intent being to prevent interracial marriage.

This can and has been used to force or compel people to stay married because Jesus said so.

Now they're going to require couples to hire a freaking lawyer to get married?

Insanity.

11. Essentially a standardized contract between three entities

All of which must agree. One of which has no business with veto authority.

People enter into contracts all the time without a lawyer. If you buy a home, a car, or even an airplane ticket you are entering into a contract and few people hire lawyers for such things. A marriage contract would only require signed witnesses or a notary stamp to be solidly legal as any marriage license.

I think the state does have vested interest in ensuring all parties consent, and I guess I'm old fashioned, but Fathers should not marry daughters, etc. etc.

3. To me, it should just be a contract. Two people want to be married, fine, it's a contract. I know,

some want to inject their god, churches and all of that into it, but really, in the big picture it is just another contract. I'm OK with all states and churches getting out of the marriage business. Two people do the contract, fine, then if they want to layer that with religion and churches, fine, it's up to them.

5. The difference between a marriage contract and a marriage license is government approval/denial

The government shouldn't be in the business of deciding who should and shouldn't be able to get married.
