Irish will back same-sex marriage, says likely US president contender
Speaking ahead of a visit to Dublin, Mr OMalley, a regular visitor to Ireland, told The Irish Times at a Democratic Party convention in South Carolina that he expects Irelands same-sex marriage referendum to pass.
The liberal Democratic former mayor of Baltimore and governor of the state of Maryland is a strong supporter of equal marriage rights.
He led the passage of same- sex marriage legislation in Maryland in 2012 and has been calling for a similar measure nationally in the United States, describing the right to marry as a human right.
All of us should be free to practise whatever religion we choose, but I think all of us can agree that there is dignity in every childs home and every childs home should be protected legally under the law, he said.
That was the conclusion that the people of Maryland came to at the ballot and I think thats what the Irish people will conclude as well.
