For other moms on the police force, killing of Officer Kerrie Orozco really hits home

Story below my comments.

Sophia Jordon, Omaha’s “officer of the year,” was stabbed outside a gas station in 2014.

Ofcr. Jordon above is mentioned in the story. I worked with her at the OPD front desk before and after she was was stabbed outside a gas station last year while answering a 911 call. I remember getting the word she was down. Terrifying.

Wonderful caring person. She also brought us world class biscotti for the OPD headquarters.

By Erin Grace / World-Herald columnist

Before her shift on a dreary Wednesday, Omaha Police Officer Robyn Bruning cleaned the kitchen, set aside sandwiches for herself and her husband, Jim, and enjoyed a quiet house with her 4-year-old son.

The babies — a 2-year-old daughter and 1-year-old son — were napping. Jim’s 11-year-old daughter was at school. And Jim, a police officer, too, who patrols the northwest precinct where they live, was due home for lunch.

But about 1 p.m., Robyn’s phone started buzzing like crazy. Officer shot. Female. Officer en route to hospital. Code 99 — resuscitation needed.

Robyn is a former homicide detective who now works the child victim unit and handles gritty assignments such as child autopsies. She can take horrible news.

Police work isn't even in the top ten most dangerous professions: it is outdone by farming/agriculture and a whole bunch of other, much more hazardous professions. More police officers die in car accidents than get killed in the line of duty.

The list of more dangerous professions includes:Construction Laborers, Electrical Power-Line Installers And Repairers, Farmers, Ranchers, And Other Agricultural Managers, Driver/Sales Workers and Truck Drivers, Mining Machine Operators, Refuse And Recyclable Material Collectors, Roofers, Aircraft Pilots And Flight Engineers.

That's correct: being a sanitation worker is MUCH more statistically dangerous than being a police officer. Look it up. Where are their memorials and 5,000 person salutes?

The point is this: while this death is a tragedy, so are all early deaths. The problem is that this woman's death is being used as propaganda to excuse the rapidly expanding police state that is enveloping our nation. How many other recent mothers died in the country during that week? That same day? Why don't they receive the same glowing, hagiographic eulogies?

When a mother was held up at Wendy's in Omaha, my opinion took a beating. Police killed the suspect and a "COPS" sound man was killed by friendly fire.

Why didn't you comment on the police defending THAT young mother? Look it up.

This OP from the DUer that has posted more about death on the job by men and women more than any other DUer.
