[img][/img]
During World War II, my dad was a chief petty officer at the Great Lakes Naval Station outside of Chicago, responsible for training thousands of sailors before they went to the Pacific Theater. Sometimes, my dad accompanied his trainees to the West Coast before they shipped out. He told me later that it broke his heart to know that some of them would never come home.
When my dad died twenty-two years ago, many sailors who had served under him sent me letters and photographs. My favorite photo shows my dad in his uniform smiling broadly. To me, he looked as handsome as any 1940s movie star. It meant a great deal to me that these men took time to honor my dad, the same way my dad taught us to honor those who fell in the line of duty.
Today, I hope well all take a moment to remember the many men and women who gave their lives to protect our country. These brave Americans knew that freedom is earned by each new generation.
My thoughts today are with those families whose sons and daughters sacrificed so much so that all our children can be safe. I hope all of us will honor their memories with our own service to our country, and to each other.
Thank you,
Hillary

(135,425 posts)Which, of course, leads me to wonder why anyone purporting to support a candidate like Senator Sanders would do or say things that make people think that this candidate's supporters don't understand his perspective on the campaign process.
I think if you support a candidate, you should support that candidate--not engage in trash-talking others. Senator Sanders has SAID AS MUCH. I guess some of those who purport to support his candidacy don't want to listen to him.
And if the default mode is to trash talk others, it says a lot--none of it good--about how deep or sincere the support for the preferred candidate is.
I like Senator Sanders a lot. He's a nice guy, a kind person, with good values. I find a few--not all, but a few--of his "supporters" here on DU a bit problematic, though. I don't think he'd say ANY of the things some of these "supporters" are saying. And I put "supporters" in "scare quotes" because while I think some of them actually do support Senator Sanders, and are being swept up in a tide of partisan enthusiasm, and are following along when louder, more aggressive posters engage in bashing, rudeness, context-free association (sounds nicer than "prevarication" , and utter bullshitting.
I think some of those "supporters" have a completely different agenda in mind, that has as a goal a Rubio or Rand in the White House. I hope the admins will look into that, but I'm not going to hold my breath.
The conduct of the Clinton bashers in this thread says so much about them. They should really listen to THEIR candidate. The fact that they don't is rather sadly telling.

(32,139 posts)Serially advocating the for-profit warmongering of the MIC should have disqualified her from any consideration for the presidency on Day One. And we have not only these corrupt, bloody alliances, but an entire filthy record of Third Way policy agenda, representing the One Percent rather than the 99 percent, and dishonestly pandering to voters by claiming she supports policies she has historically opposed.
We have a grave, systemic problem in this country. It is problem of filthy corporate money buying our elections and our political candidates. Hillary Clinton is the poster candidate for this problem. Her record is that of a Third Way, corporate-purchased politician AND a neocon.
Enough lying. Enough corruption. Enough is enough.
It is the civic duty of American citizens to speak honestly about the monied corruption in our system and to advocate against purchased candidates and for actual representatives of the people. We can't afford four more years of corporate predation.

(32,139 posts)Sorry, MADem. Your nastiness here only compounds the embarrassment of the post.
Pretending that the poster said Bernie voted for WWII was an absurdly dishonest and diversionary response, typical (like the other actual example I gave) of what we've come to expect from the familiar message control crew here. That you appear on cue with ad hominem to attempt to divert from the obvious just underscores how accurate my observation was.
Here's the upshot. Here's the important lesson here:
People are sick of the game playing, the dishonesty, and the manipulation.
They've had enough of corrupt politicians who lie their way through campaigns claiming to stand for one thing but then doing exactly the opposite.
Sick of glossy campaign videos and slick ad campaigns, while craven politicians hide from voters' questions and stage carefully-crafted non-answers.
And sick of manipulative online messaging campaigns that rely on feigned stupidity and smear to divert from the corporate candidate's neocon record.
Representatives represent. Corporate politicians manipulate.
That's why we need Bernie, and why all the dispensing of manipulative corporate talking points only underscores why we need him even more.
He's honest. He's not a manipulator. He's not aligned with bloody, profiteering neocons.
And this nation is starved for honesty.

But hey--I'll TAKE that "Bye bye." Even though you've dumped your trash and run off, it's preferable to having you continue to engage in pointless, childish, exactly-what-Sanders-disavows, conduct.

I will add that your post above is a *particularly* slimy Third Way manipulation, because it *not only* tries to smear me with a deliberate fabrication, but it also works to normalize a despicable tactic used by corporate politicians, i.e., dismissing information based on source rather than truthfulness.
That's an important tactic for corrupt propaganda states, because if you can discount information based solely on who published it, you can control information by ensuring that your "approved" sources never publish anything unflattering to you. That's why we see the predictable and ongoing attempts to smear alternative media such as The Intercept or RT when they publish information that is damning to corporate politicians.

Bernie has suffered the same slights and insults--but not from the Clinton supporters here. Most think he's a nice guy, a fair guy, an honorable guy, a good guy-- even if they don't think he has the personality or the leadership qualities to be POTUS. The hate and vitriol heaped upon him come from people sharing his political party, who are to the LEFT of the view the Clinton-bashers purport to embrace.
Read some of this stuff, courtesy of the Socialists--it's every bit as vitriolic as the stuff Clinton's catching. Even some of the hot-breathed exhortations sound similar. Makes me wonder if they all aren't copying one another~!

is the weird Orwellian suggestion that bringing up the candidate's *actual* record is somehow unseemly in a thread about Memorial Day.
What a bizarre replacement of the meaning of the day with a corporate, Hallmark version in which a politician can stand for murderous corporate policy, but we have to applaud mouthed, pretty slogans out of politeness, because it's a holiday.
Cute pictures of the candidate as a child. Well, that child grew up to vote for a war based in lies, that murdered how many children? That candidate was complicit in a right-wing coup in Honduras, from which countless women and children have had to flee. That candidate voted with Republicans against a humanitarian amendment to protect children from cluster bombs.
I find our propaganda state revolting. It offers, like a drumbeat, a twisted, utterly perverse version of history and human morality. Utterly sick, weird rules for accepting the intolerable as long as it comes in a shiny blue package. Corporate ownership of government and media is a cancer.
I think the infiltration happened so deliberately and gradually that people didn't even realize how sick the messaging had become. But now that we have an honest candidate in the race, they do see...
And the contrast is growing this urgency to rid ourselves of the corrupt and insist on honesty again. That War is War.

The new corporate Memorial Day, in which being truthful about history and policy is considered unseemly, and in which we are to smile our plastic smiles and pretend that the oh-so-moving, focus group-tested words of corporate politicians are more important than their actual policies that keep the blood, and the profits, flowing.

(9,610 posts)This generation needs to fight for freedom from war. Imo, no military conflict since WWII has been a fight for our freedom. They have been fights by tptb to enshrine fascism into the nation.

It's tragic enough when soldiers give their lives in a mission that actually protects their country.

....
On September 6, 2006, a Senate billa simple amendment to ban the use of cluster bombs in civilian areaspresented Senator Clinton with a timely opportunity to protect the lives of children throughout the world.
The cluster bomb is one of the most hated and heinous weapons in modern war, and its primary victims are children.
Senator Obama voted for the amendment to ban cluster bombs. Senator Clinton, however, voted with the Republicans to kill the humanitarian bill, an amendment in accord with the Geneva Conventions, which already prohibit the use of indiscriminate weapons in populated areas.

Disgusting. Did you think no one would know the difference?

I am sure Mr. Rodham was very proud of his daughter. I wonder if he saw her as perhaps someday achieving the Presidency. I wish her well and Godspeed in her continued work and service.

(30,058 posts)Appreciate true patriots. This is their loss, it dies not mean most Americans know who the patriots were and what they did. I honor those who accepted the call to duty, thank you for your service. Just ignore the naughty and perhaps they still take the privilege to sound off, unexplainable.
