Quiverfull of Shit: a Guide to the Duggar's Scary Brand of Christianity
Pride insisted that no woman could possibly find true happiness without submitting to her vision of Christianity: Relinquish control of your womb to God, and exist only to please your husband, give birth, feed everyone, and educate your children in the homealmost certainly without having received any formal higher education yourself.
From the moment a Duggar in possession of a vagina is born or married into the family, she falls under the control of Christian Patriarchy. The wife is forever under the authority of her husband, and a daughter is completely subservient to her father until the day he finds a suitable husband to take up the role. The women of Quiverfull are never supposed to disobey their male authority figure, ever, even if its something they find immoral. Because they think God would rather you kill a guy because your husband says so than to disobey the orders of a man.
Women arent supposed to work outside the home, and if the father cant find anyone for his daughter to court and marry, they have to live at home to take care of the other children. (Sorry, Jana Duggar.) College? Whats that? Theres no room for individuality for men or women when youre immediately dictated into a role based on the kind of genitals you have.

(13,877 posts)active training to take over the Title of Patriarch in Chief. That is perhaps the most important of His, Jim Bob's job. Jim Bob's single statement referring to a "tough time in his family" referred only to the damning secret getting out. He quickly squelched any further professional notice by letting the statue of limitations run out. That meant the youngest was likely 8 years old by that time. And who knows what happened after that.
I think there is a reason that, at this time, no other male was involved in these actions. Of course they all know about it, but somehow it seems to only be taboo to the "lesser" sons. But, we may find out differently, god help us.

(8,175 posts)If a young child is molested, they quite often don't/won't say anything about it until they are adults. By then, nothing can be done to the perp except public shaming.
That is just wrong.

(13,877 posts)California they tell you up front their purpose is to reintegrate into the family. Law enforcement isn't even a part of the equation. Trouble is, with young children, the most likely targets, aren't believed, and even if they are, they won't be placed elsewhere because the family (or offending spouse) will sue or raise a stink, or whatever.
This is why so many people are surprised. It wouldn't have made it to this point with the Duggars had they not been so public and hypocritical. It was hidden once, and it's been expunged now, but the internet is not quite so forgiving.

(9,126 posts)These people should all be exposed because their religion is all about keeping women as chattel so they can be used and abused. People have been talking for a while that the "purity balls" were creepy as hell, but now we know there is a LOT more going on (as suspected). They are celebrated and put on tevee and sold as "good Christians" and people (even on DU!!!) eat it up with a spoon. I can't even tell you what I think should happen with these guys.
These are fathers with their daughters!!!!!!!!!!!!

(9,126 posts)Putting these girls in wedding dresses, taking wedding photos, and pledging the father sole access to her reproductive parts is downright creepy. I gotta say, the father daughter ball is a throwback to male paternalism too. And it does a great job of excluding those girls being raised by single mothers. All that stuff is on purpose.

(39,215 posts)live with their children due to custody decisions. Many of the fathers are single fathers who do not have a lot of interaction with their children - especially their daughters because there is not much for them to do together - at least nothing this big. My grandsons take several children who are members of a single mother family along with their own girls. We have a long history of stepping in to help a child in the family who does not have a father. As to the boys they take one look at their fathers duded up in a tux and say "yuk" we don't want to go to that ball.
But I do agree with you that their religious framing is just plain sick.

(9,126 posts)Whether you are being raised by a mom and dad, a mom or a dad, two moms or two dads, or your grandparents, you're ALL invited. Kids have hurt feelings for life when they are singled out for being different. Inclusion is key. But that is not what these people want. They want it to be white, "Christian", and hetero. And they're trying to breed an army to do it.

(39,215 posts)I talk about my family going they are all Native American and non-Christian. In fact all races are included. It is a community event that allows the girls to have something special. And as I said elsewhere the boys do not want to go but I suspect if any did want to go they would not be denied.
I see what you are saying and maybe in many parts of the country it would be totally correct. Not here in NE MN. We are about as liberal as one can get. eg. There were more girls enrolled in wrestling than boys and they wrestled each other.

(9,126 posts)I've just seen too many of them hurt kid's feelings. I know schools in liberal areas are trying to do their best. I just think we have to let go of the old ideas and come up with new ones. There's too much baggage. But I'm not a parent, so I'm not trying to make choices for anyone. If it works and builds self esteem for kids and strong relationships with parents, great.

(12,081 posts)or 7 I think. They looked so cute together. My daughter is definitely a daddy's girl, but she is a daddy's girl because he spends time with her, not because she belongs to him. That purity crap is so creepy.

(50,566 posts)not "respecting" religious beliefs -- no matter how fucking bizarre or "out there" these beliefs are.
A lot of us realize this stuff doesn't exist in a vacuum and has real-world repercussions (usually misogynistic, homophobic, and anti-science in nature). Therefore, criticizing belief -- particularly belief based on mythology with no evidence behind it -- is fair game.

I want my politicians to announce that their religion plays no part in their professional lives. No, I DEMAND IT. We all should.

(15,139 posts)daddy supposedly until he dredges up some "Godly" young man for them and marries them off. However, JimBob Duggar is too much of a control freak to let anybody go. His two married daughters live in Duggar family owned houses and the younger son-in-law, who just turned 20, works scrubbing toilets and doing odd jobs for JimBob. Creepy doesn't begin to describe it.

(4,019 posts)I saw the name Mary Pride and looked up information about her because it is claimed that she is the mother of the Quiverfull movement, a claim she denies.
Anyway, I ran across this link to an interesting blog, No Longer Quivering: http://www.patheos.com/blogs/nolongerquivering/2014/06/mary-pride-denies-founding-the-quiverfull-movement/
It is incredible to read the thought processes of how women fall into this movement and how they are able to finally find enlightenment and leave this destructive movement.

Heavily patriarchal religion is the most pernicious cancer of the human spirit, denying half the human race their essential humanity and turning them into property.
