When Jessica VanHusen noticed her dog Kiaya squinting at her with one eye, she knew something wasn’t right.

“I found out she had glaucoma, which is increased pressure in her eyeball,” VanHusen of Waterford, Michigan, tells WXYZ Detroit.

“When Kiaya originally presented we started treatments for glaucoma,” says Dr. Michael West, a Veterinary Opthalmologist at BluePearl Veterinary Partners.

The medicine helped that eye continue to see for a time, but eventually, to ease Kiaya’s pain, the eye had to be removed. Then the same thing happened to the other eye.

She was 90% blind from a URI when we rescued her, and her brother (partially blind in one eye) led her to food and litter box. Well, she let him. She did more with that 10% than any full-sighted cat. But It was adorable to see him guiding her about.
